Gear shifting

Do all FRS' make a clanking noise when shifting gears? Or is this just that mine? 😅

I don't know if I would call it "clanking" but I can definitely hear mechanical shifting when changing gears.

Yes they all make a bit of noise. Not a grinding noise but nice mechanical actuall gear change. One of the first issues everyone noticed about manuals.

You'll be fine. One thing many people do is changed tranny fluid to some pricy gear oil like Motul, Redline, Amsoil, etc. Pretty much everyone is on the same page that switching fuilds made shifting smoother. And on cold days/warm ups 2nd gear is a bit of a struggle to get into but smooth as butter once it's up to temp.

Well, hello, TexasFRS and welcome to our fine forum........

I figure you have a manual transmission ..... ??

If so, yes, the transmission does make some "mechanical" sounds when shifting gears. In the FRS it's more noticeable because of the "light" insulation and because the driver is sitting right next to the transmission.

Also, the shift lever is almost directly in contact with the gears.

Here is my stock suggestions for shifting the FR-S:

First off, this transmission is happier when it is warm.

I would suggest that when shifting, wind up the last gear pretty tight (4-5,000 rpms) before shifting into the next higher gear.

Also, when shifting, pull (or push) the shift lever slowly and firmly into the next gear.

It's not a toggle switch ..... the lever is moving heavy transmission parts.

I suggest you NOT "lazy leg" it ……. do push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor.

If this technique doesn't help, you may consider changing the transmission oil.

I just hear the mechanisms moving around like they should. It sounds different from this.

Your fine. The gearbox in the 86 is really notchy and has a mechanical feel to it.
