Whatever. When I compare ten minutes of my time spent doing that versus endless loops of taking it to a dealer and never getting it fixed to suit...I think the economics are pretty clear.

There are no endless loops with the new part number. It just works.

I don't doubt that it holds the mirror adaptor to the shoe rigidly. If they redesigned the spring, that could be better too.

But it can't fix the issue with the flexible mounting of the base to the glass. I guarantee there's less vibration in the mirror on my car than on any with nothing done in that regard. Whether the stock arrangement is 'good enough', though, is in the eye of the individual.

If you say so.

Then again, I actually have the functioning part in my possession, installed on my car, and have tested it rather than commenting based on speculation. So there's that.

To each his own. I'd rather not have JB weld anywhere near my car. It screams half-assed hackery to me.

By the way, is there any verification/documentation of the proposition that the mirror mounts the way it does for regulatory reasons?

The notion makes sense, but there are five cars in my household - all 2012 or 2013 - and only two of them have mirrors that mount like this - the other three have the old-style shoe-glued-to-glass setup. Seems as though if it really was a regulatory requirement, they'd all be the same or similar.

I found this - http://www.nhtsa.gov/DOT/NHTSA/Vehic...TP-111-V00.pdf

Pertinent text seems to be:

(1) REQUIREMENTS (S5.1.2)

If the mirror is in the head impact area, the mounting shall deflect, collapse, or break away without leaving sharp edges when the reflective surface of the mirror is subjected to a force of 400 N (90 lb) in any forward direction that is not more than 45 degrees from the longitudinal direction.

So it seems as though breakaway is an option but not a requirement - collapse works too, and that seems to be how most cars are made; the link connecting the base to the mirror pivots downward and allows the assembly to collapse toward the glass.

My freaking home link mirror just fell off! Dang it was very embarrassing driving down loop 410 with a hanging home link mirror! Wtf this is a brand new car? Took it to the dealership Gilman Subaru! They seem to know this is a known problem and they are fixing me up fast and good! Hopefully they use the new parts! I tried fixing it myself buy those screws were stripped in that plate! This is definitely a defect! Subaru needs to fix this.

Mine fell off too.
Yes, added blue loctite, no more wobble, for now.

how much wobble should i accept before it's gonna fall off? when i'm driving, it shakes just a bit to make the image blurrier than the side mirrors. there's no noise and there's no play when i'm shaking it with my hands though.

Do what I did. U see any vibration at all even minor. Take it in and they'll replace it under warranty. 10 min job. Seems like a common issue.

they wouldnt cover mine even after purchasing two adapters that rattled.. they said it was a installer error and that I should of used blue loctite.. I dont remember the instructions stating to use blue loctite..

I'm not really that confident the new one will fix it though.. Picked it up yesterday, and I'll see if this one holds.. If not I'm certainly not going to purchase another.. I may try the JB weld route and use different hardware.. or I might try and repair the threads with a timesert kit
