Had my dealer check mine (it was OK) last oil change and they said that it was covered under a dealer "Notice" so not even at the TSB level according to them.
Some dealers may just call everything a "recall" since customers would know the word better than TSB or Notice.

Cut a piece of 3M black vinyl to size and cover the metal with it. So long as it's not rubbing painted metal it should be fine. Would the windows' up/down motion cause some rubbing as well?

The primary mode of wear is mostly from opening and closing the door, and the vibrations that causes. Window opening and closing doesn't have a huge affect on that particular area. |

I have the same issue except mine is visible without pulling the strip away. I can't even move the strip so it does not seem like rubbing caused it for me. Maybe it was a manufacturer error when they assembled the door

I checked mine last week and it showed a little bit of rust, showed it to the dealer and they said it is only covered under the 3 year 60k bumper to bumper warranty. I'm out of that range due to km's and they said the corrosion warranty doesn't apply to things like this. Nonetheless Ill just seal it up myself to prevent it from growing/getting worse.

Mines aren't as bad as some pictured here but they have started to show some rust. I showed them to the dealership at my last (free) oil change. After they tried and failed to clean it they agreed to replaced both pillars along with my peeling steering wheel.
It seemed to be the 1st time they had to deal with this issue. |

Are the replacement ones different somehow, or is this just likely to happen again with the new ones too?

I've already passed my 36,000 Miles/3 Year warranty bumper to bumper. Would this rust problem be considered under the 60 month/unlimited miles rust and corrosion warranty?
