The key with button doesn't send a signal unless the button is pushed. The car only looks for the security code when you start it. This is close proximity and no broadcast is required.

The remote entry feature of the fob means it is sending a signal to the car saying "I am here you can unlock now" all the time even when not actually near the car. This is why the interior lights come on when you are about 6 feet away from the car and just touching the handle opens it up.

Naturally the fob uses way more power to send the signal all the time. Three or four years is pretty good for a broadcast fob and the normal key should get maybe three times that.

I thought about that after I posted my response. I guess I always thought the fob worked like an RFID tag where it only sends a signal when the receiver "energizes" it.

Yes, a key fob with buttons but I don't press anything, as soon as I grab the door handle the car unlocks (that's assuming that the fob is in my pocket and the car battery is tip top)..

So a remote fob.
The FRS has the actual key with buttons which is the difference. You have to take the fob out and push the button to unlock the door.
Whole different system then the remote fob.

It's a fob, with an emergency key contained within the body of the fob. The emergency key only opens the driver's door as that is the only door with a physical lock. I don't have an ignition barrel (I think I don't..).

Today I learned that whether I go to bed at 20:00 or 01:00, I will never be able to wake up easily for work.

Same as I have on the 86 now.
I don't know about there but here the FRS, 17+base 86 and the BRZ Premium all had just the key with the buttons. Those batteries will last forever (well in comparison).
The keyless entry/start fob like we have will chew up batteries in a relatively short time. It is the price we pay for convenience. I had keyless entry and start on the 3 cars prior to getting the FRS and even 5 years into owning it I would still leave the key in my pocket and look for the button about once a month. Then I would mutter under my breath about primitive technology as I rummaged around in my pocket the find the damned key.

I used to not have an issue with it, I was up at 0500 for work, did my stretching, coffee, etc and was ready to face the day. But now I just want to fall down the stairs so I have an excuse to keep sleeping

Not sure falling down the stairs is a good strategy for sleeping.. try falling into bed or a comfy chair/sofa..
