Roll bar progress

PLEASE DON'T QUOTE THIS HUGE POST just to ask a question
It's my thread, I'll see it

Been a while since we last updated..

- Switching to 18x10's for 2021. Offset TBD but currently running about +35 front and rear. XXR 527 CNC forged for now. Prototype new design 949 Racing CNC forged in a few months
- Running a bit more camber now, -5° and -3.5° rear.
- Swapping the clear polycarbonate duck tail spoiler for a 72" GT250 foil with Singular Motorsports end plates.
- Went back to the OEM front bumper skin to save some weight over the APR GT bumper (which is for sale BTW)
- Adding a 5" alumalite (10mm) splitter
- Adding a full under tray to the firewall, 6mm alumalite
- Crawford BPB manifold spacers and retune from Delicious
- Should gain about 20 lbs with the mods
- Adding Racequip 6pt FIA 2" pull down belts for both seats

We ordered some PSC2 240 and Goodyear SC3R's in 255/35/18. Haven't run them yet. We guess it'll run about 1.5s faster than it did last year on the long tracks. Within the outright 86 records and ahead of a few overall 86 records.

Blub is currently at Renderos racing in Hesperia, CA getting a roll bar. We went with a basic design. Single diagonal in main hoop and lateral harness bar, rear stays with no x brace. The rear stays will have quick release couplers to make it easier to install. The goals is for Alex to be able to ship the bars at a much lower expense because they'll pack nearly flat.

Alex will build whatever you want based on this template. More braces, custom colors, etc. Looking forward to having a real camera mount finally. No idea on pricing. https://renderosracing.com/

I can tell you're proud of the welds. You and whoever did them has every right to be. They are gorgeous.

The right equipment + the ability to use it = ART

I can't weld. That's Alex Renderos handiwork, Renderos Racing. I think most of his roll bars and cages are TIG welded. Agree with you though, damn purty. Shame to cover it up with paint :P

Well that escalated quickly LOL. I'll buy the spoiler if you don't want to keep it. Renderos said they didn't want to make more of them at this time, but it's looking like SCCA might allow aero in the tuner classes this year.

Yup. Shoot Ed and email info@949racing.com

We ran it with the ducktail for about a year and a half. Accomplished most of what we wanted to. Decided to bump up from Modified (86 Cup) and Touring (86 Drive Challenge) to Unlimited. We think that'll make it more fun for the drivers and shops in those classes if they don't have to compete against Sonny in Blub.

That gives us the freedom to play with a bit more. KPower's new K24 kit has us all salivating at the though of a mildly built 240whp N/A K motor that's 140 lbs lighter with better weight distribution. Even with the current FA20 we suspect it'll be 1.5-2s faster on most tracks when it runs next. That kinda speed really demands a roll bar and 6 points.

Sounds great, I'll shoot him an email later today. Do you have any results from the crawford power blocks? Very interested to see how that worked out for you guys.

Man, the K series swap definitely looks appealing. I'm class limited to the FA20, but it's shaping up to be an excellent swap so far. It would really be interesting to see what you guys could do with it.

Haven't been to the dyno yet. Blub went to Renderos Racing right after we installed he BPB. Getting a custom roll bar. Will publish results when we dyno it.

That said, back to back dynos with BPB have been done many times over the last 8 years. Pretty conclusive and consistent results. I don't expect our results to be any different.

To me is interesting generic consensus, if it's worth performance/speed-wise in actual racing to sacrifice top rpm performance to gain in mid rpms, by shifting curve with likes of BPB. Or it's track-specific, just like optimum FD? It works in normal DD, but are BPB worthy change for track?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting miracles to come from it. I think the couple different boundary conditions that have me interested are:

1. There's not much data on decently modded E85 BPB cars out there
2. Bill is probably one of if not the most knowledgeable FT86 tuner out there, and now he'll be able to pick up where he left off with your 4-2-1 JDL EL header car that has a lot of development time from him in it already

I don't think there has been a consensus on the power blocks. Here is a post from Delicious from a while back where they claim the BPBs cause heat soak and power loss: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/show...86&postcount=7

They also claimed OEM used plastic for an IM material for a reason only for OEM to use Al a few years later. lol First time I ever heard of that issue tbh.

OFT seemed to offer a different result and more detail.

Plastic heat soaks much worse than aluminum. The issue is the relative thermal inertia. Plastic absorbs heat very quickly but does not disperse it. So it stores it like a bank. Aluminum on the other hand, absorbs heat very quickly but disperses just as quickly.

What we have found in testing is that an aluminum intake tube may absorb heat under the hood but as soon as you open the throttle and blast air through it cools almost instantly. This reflected by an immediate drop in IAT as measured downstream. In contrast, a plastic tube will absorb even more heat in the same conditions but not cool down rapidly like the aluminum tube will. Reflected in sustained high IAT after the tube absorbs heat. This particular data done back to back same day with the same shape and diameter tubes.

OEMs use plastic intake manifolds because they are lightweight and cheaper to produce than aluminum. Not because they present a performance advantage. It is also easier to control the surface texture and and precise internal shape with a molded plastic part than it is a typical cast aluminum intake manifold.

I have a hard time believing a small aluminum spacer is going to significantly affect IAT. That's just counter to basic physics.

Regarding the lack of data with E85, we have done literally thousands of dyno pulls with gas and E85. I have seen nothing in 15 years to indicate that air flow changes do not port over from one fuel to another. Again any assertion that it might is counter to basic physics.

Taking guesses based on supposition and conjecture is fine as long as it's framed as such. Too often however, that is misinterpreted as fact on the internet. I will stick with data collected under controlled conditions.

I would happily trade some power off the top for it to shift 300-500 lower in the RPM range.

I am watching this with quite interest. I was never really fully satisfied with the info that is out there already.
