Super dusty pads. HELP!!!

So I have a 6 piston front and 4 piston rear AP Racing brake set up and the "stock" pads that come with them are super dusty. I have the gunmetal Gram light 57Xtreme's, and they look brown from the brake dust. It's bugging the heck out of me.


First question is are all 4 piston and 6 piston brake pads the same size?


Second, I do a lot of running my car over mountain roads and a dozen or so track days a year, and love the grip my pads give me. But I also DD my car as well. Does anyone have any suggestions for a pad that you like that's not very dusty?

If you're running a dozen or so track days a year, you should have dedicated track pads...

With additional mass (significant amount with that brake system), you can run a less aggressive pad than smaller BBKs or factory brake systems. Getting a track pad just means you have a more consistent bite as well as a higher operating temperature limit to work with than "street compound" pads.

The downside for BBK are a few that people don't consider. The rigidity of the caliper will reduce the ability to damp high frequency vibrations produce when two frictional surfaces contact, in simple terms, more noise even with less aggressive pads. The other downside is the ability to bed in brake pads. More aggressive brake pads have a harder time bedding into the BBK system. The reason why is because it's quite a bit more challenging to bring the system up to temp.

Then there are upside...well...there are plenty, but consistency and lowering consumable costs over a long period of time are the main reasons behind BBKs.

Your answer will be answered a little quicker by the vendor you purchased from regarding pad fitment since the rest of us don't know exactly what calipers you're running. AP Racing makes hundreds of calipers so you're going to have to provide some additional details to allow the rest of us to help you out.

Dust is a function of performance. If it's high performance and low dust, it means something else is wearing down. Something has to give. Everything is a compromise.

This! If you get a high performance pad that is low dust, it's probably eating your rotors.

Tried a wheel protectant. Good idea btw, but what I got was a weird sheen on the wheels. Nothing that comes through in pix. But has a weird shine in the sun

Contact LPI Racing in Livermore. They'll ask for the measurements of your pads and forward that to, in my case Raybestos, to their brake pros. Raybestos as well other brands can custom cut if your pads are way off from OEM already-existing pads. Your BBKs shouldn't be out of this world so your measurements will be near already-existing OEMs (Porsche, Vettes, etc). They won't cut per SE but trim an already existing close match. You can also select the grade and function of the pads. May cost a lil but more for the custom trim/grade but it'll be what you want.

True what's been stated, if your going to track that match, have a dedicated set. FWIW, my Brembos are on Raybestos st43 for track use and Ferodos for DD. Dusty, noisy, bites like hell VS clean and quiet enuf to do a drive by.

I run HP+ pads, and they are very dusty and make my silver wheels look bronze after a few days.

If you are looking for something to help keep the wheels looking new, Sonax full effect wheel cleaner is pretty good. Spray on, wait for it to turn blood red, rinse off. Pressure washer will erase every trace of brake dust with Sonax, and a garden hose does a pretty bang up job as well.

You should check out Carbotech wheel cleaner... :p

It won't make the dust go away, but it'll make it much easier to get off.
