Back in the day...
I was aboard a destroyer escort (the biggest ship in the Canadian Navy) and they had to change a screw while still moored to the service jetty. Since it was stuck they used small C4 charges to loosen it up. Every time they set off a charge a dozen or so fish would float to the surface. Want too guess what we had for dinner that day? Or there was the wonderful time we went out for six weeks and supply screwed up and sent us with no meat other than frozen veal cutlets. There are only so many ways you can make veal cutlets edible. On the plus side the beer in the vending machines was only 25 cents and the wardroom had a fully stocked bar.

Wow. We didn't have anything adventurous at sea. I hear you on the veal. When I was on the Ranger they did this thing where every Friday was steak and lobster - for six months. Took me years to get over that.

Well stated @justatroll.
@why? If you are going to use jack stands on dirt/gravel, know that they will likely sink into the ground somewhat with the weight of the car on them. Find something flat and solid to set the stands on. A 1/2" thick or more piece of plywood should suffice.

There's nothing worse than working in a gravel drive IMHO. But, if you laid down several sheets of 3/4" plywood and drove onto the platform, it may be okay.
Safety is the number one concern and I'd still recommend beefing up under the jacks as well. Why, never work alone under a car! Shit happens. Here's a pic of what I mean. Ignore the canopy. |
