Suspension position sensors

I am planning to install a set of four suspension position sensors on my GT86. My suspension is all stock. Any idea what length should I get and were are they best mounted ?

Hi ya Mikefarr and welcome to our group -

Oh, sorry, I must ask - why do you want to do that, since the GT86 has a passive suspension?

Do you mean non-adjustable suspension? To me active suspension means the damping is controlled from external source like Audi's Magnetic Ride and passive is what most cars use which is different from adjustable damping.

What?

For shits and giggles could you post a picture of these "sensors" you want to install?
Or a link to where you bought them?

OP is gonna have to be a lot more specific in what he's asking. I assume the OP is referring sensors that track the movement of suspension components under load. My question is, why does the OP need to be measuring his suspension in this way?

Whatever the reason, the cost can be...uh...exorbitant.

You can use them to do things like calculate downforce, measure body roll, tell you if you're bottoming out the suspension, if they sample fast enough they can help you make damper adjustments, etc. Could probably even derive things like cg and roll center heights.

I'm not sure what you'd get from putting them on a car with stock suspension. It has some sort of a data aq system but stock struts and springs? I suppose it would give you a baseline before changing things.

But if you're going to be adding these, you can't take the wheels off and stick a measuring tape on a few things to decide what to get and where to put them?

Suspension Travel:
Bump Travel = 2.5 in or 0.1 m
Rebound Travel = 3.5 in or 0.15 m

I'd get around 6" of travel on the sensors, find someone who can weld a tab on the upper spring perch and the lower spring perch, allow the sensor to rotate and such to account for the strut movement but it's pretty simple standalone and you're getting true shock motion out of it which can easily be extrapolated to wheel motion with some of the other parameters in that thread.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone for input. What I am after is something like jamal posted. they are on the market with various lengths and stokes. Just need to choose the correct size for front and rear. They are not cheep actually but I would like to be able to log how the suspension is behaving. It gives you an idea also when a wheel is lifting and loosing traction or just grip.
Jamal is that an FR-S suspension? I prefer if I can mount them without having to weld to the suspension arms. I am afraid that the welding will create a stress point from where the arm may fail.

This makes sens. Is that travel for both front and rear?

Not sure, ultimately getting your car in the air taking the springs off and measuring for yourself is the absolute best solution as mentioned above, it's understandable to want to minimize downtime for your car but in this case taking the longer path to make sure you do it right will pay off when it comes to science experiments.

GSpeed did this on their track car. Here's the post from their journal thread.

You're referring to linear shock potentiometers. Depending on how accurate you need your data and how much resolution you need, you could also choose to run shorter shock pots and mount them slightly more inboard rather than trying to get a 1:1 measurement. This could open up some more mounting options. Also depending on what you want the data to be displayed, you'll just have to account for the installation to shock/wheel travel ratio.

Where are you getting your sensors from, and what setup are you using for datalogging?

AFRichZC6,
I have not decided yet which sensors to use. They are a bit expensive so better think twice.
For data logging I have built my own. All other inputs come from CAN apart from an IMU and GPS for which I have a module incorporated on the PCB with external antenna. This will be the first analog inputs.
