Bilstein B6/B8 bump travel? Cut internal bumpstops?
I'm on Swift BRZ Sport springs, 1.1"/1" drop. Does anyone know the bump travel with Bilstein B6/B8 struts and shocks?
I'd like to end up with at least ~6mm bump travel before hitting the internal stops starting from 1.1" lower-than-stock ride height up front. I'm guessing that will require cutting down the internal bump stops. Does anyone have info on how much bump travel these struts have before hitting the internal bump stops? TIA |

Bilstein typically puts ~2" about bumpstop, maybe 60mm, idk I have B14's not B6/8.
According to this thread stock is 2.5" of bump travel, -1.0" means you're about a half inch into the bump stop already. Chop the bumpstop in half and you'd get approximately what you want. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26661 |

Is riding on the bumpstop so terrible? How much spring rate does it add?

The 86 is pretty bumpstop dependent even totally stock, and whether the lowering springs in question are designed with the additional spring rate in mind is pretty much down to the instructions. Here's a chart from Koni, I don't know what an 86's stockers are, and only that Bilstein looks like they use a standard part for their struts. I'm all for experimentation, cut it cleanly and reinstall the portion you took off if the user doesn't like it. Cheap mod that can have a noticeable change. |

RCE told me they are the same length as the bump stops provided with their spring set.

The swift sport brz springs was the first thing I did to this car after camber bolts and I cut the bump stops. I felt it was a good mod, but never tested with the bumpstops intact. I did glue back the section I cut off when i remounted stock springs before selling them.

Pretty much every shop out here will tell you to trim the Bilstein bumpstops when installing lowering springs. The bumpstop inside the B6s and B8s is pretty long. The car will drive significantly better with it trimmed.
I had Sprint Spec Rs and Bilsteins. Cut them in half and you won't look back.

@Racecomp Engineering : any views on this based on your experiences with bilsteins? Any generic (if applicable) advises regarding them, if to cut, if-then by how much, or to replace with which?

Hmmm...I think I have to go back and edit what I said in 2015. The B6 and B8 have identical valving for one thing.
With Swifts I would trim the bumpstop. With our RCE Yellows, it is not required. Many people aren't comfortable opening up the Bilsteins and the car is still excellent with the standard bumpstops. - Andrew |
