New 86 Owner, well kindoff
Howsit guys, a few of the SA guys will know me already.
Names Wesley, From Kyalami. I Own a 02 MR2 spyder With a 2zzge swap and recently added a 37J 14' 86 GTS auto to my garage. Which I lovingly refer to as the storm trooper, and any star wars fan will agree that a pearl white 86, from the rear looks like a storm troopers helmet ( or maybe thats just me) The car is actually my fiances, but I have free reign to do as a please with it, and she isnt shy eaither, into track and other motorsport related activities, but was never in the position to do any of those in her previous A-class mercedes. We decided to get an 86, but the problem being that it had to be an AUTO, I must say I had never driven the car until she took delivery of it. and after taking for a spin, I must say i really do love the way the car feels, very similar to my MR2 but way way more refined and smoothed down. We looked at few other vehicles for alot less that would give the same thrills, like say a polo GTI, but our idea for the car would be that we want to keep it after the motorplan and warranty is out as it wont ( well hopefully) cost an arm and leg to maintain. The Merc had to go as it had one year on its motorplan left, and i was never going to fork out 8k for a service . And even if it is expensive, with forums like these with all the information and me being very mechanical, keeping the car going will not be an issue I was pleasantly surprised at how well specced the car is,...... but however when you look around the interior, you know that its a toyota, just a few things lack that premium feel that you would associate with another car in its pricerange. I saw videos of auto 86s before we brought this one home and i dreaded the that it may be like a lazy automatic that tyou would find on a corrolla, I was pleasantly surprised... not so. I havent really driven the car hard yet ( well par for a few traffic circles ), as its only got like 400kms on it as of now, but after some time i will really see what it can do. one thing i have found that as good as the handling is, its very different to the MR2, which is a good thing, as you can drive it on the limit much easier than you can the MR, with is very unforgiving if you lift off or brake midcorner. the 86 just gently steps out in a fun and controllable manner ( with the electronics on mind you, not brave enough to switch them off yet). So far Iv gutted the stock sound tube, because the car sounded too much like an auto camry, and gutting the sound tube has added a bit of zing to the sound. I have also changed most of the lighting to LED, and it makes a hell off a difference, all thats left is getting the LED foglight globes, but they not available locally yet so Ill probably get them from some of the popular online shops available now. In the near future Im looking to add the TRD front and sides and then see how it goes. and then after warranty etc, definitley SUPERCHARGE!! So great to be here and share info. Heres to my Storm trooper......... |
