"Excitement" does sadly come to an end, as the England team nose dives very quickly...

TIL - Actually, today I was REMINDED - - Small engines (think Briggs and Stratton) will run seemingly no matter what abuse you heap on them. My 25 year old snapper with a B&S engine quit starting. Took it apart and found the plastic intake "manifold" had broken. Same thing happened about 10 years ago and one of my son's buddies at work offered to fix it. Got it back and it ran fine until last week.

Looking at it closely, when my son's bud worked on it he apparently broke one of the bolts that hold the carb bracket to the engine. There had been two. So, he left both bolts off and fabricated a tab to attach the carb bracket to a head bolt. It ran like that for 10 years.

I decided to do it "right," so I tried Kroil on the stub of the bolt and and let it sit- hammer - punch - chisel no dice. So I cut off the bolt flush with the cylinder boss it threaded into with a Dremel. Drilled a small hole through the bolt and squirted more Kroil in the hole. Waited. Tried an easy out. No Dice. So I drilled the whole bolt out and installed a 6x1 helicoil. As I was tapping the casting for the helicoil I looked down the bolt hole and noticed I could see the piston. Sure enough, turn the crank, and it goes up and down. WTF!!

Shit. Well, I've been waiting for the Snapper to die so I could go electric - today must be the day. But, why not finish the job and see what happens. So, I

- installed the Helicoil
- installed the carb bracket with a shiny new stainless 6x1 bolt with a large blob of blue loctite to seal the threads.
- installed the other (formerly missing) bracket bolt
- installed the carb, air filter, blower housing, fuel tank.

primed it a half dozen times and it started on the second pull. Mowed the yard figuring some of the clag from drilling and tapping the mounting bracket hole would get into the cylinder and kill it. Nope. Not so far.

These things seem to be thermonuclear bomb proof. Have to wait a few weeks to go electric.

If you are going to wait until that engine can't be resurrected for a few cheap parts, you are likely going to be waiting a while. I have a cousin who as a B&S Majestic 20 crank start mower purchased by my Grandfather in the 1960s, and has been used as a mower by my Grandfather, then my Uncle and now his son.

In fact it looks about like this one....

Save it for when the electric one dies.
