Not to say the fa20 is garbage or the s550 chassis is horrible, just that they aren't the selling point of what you get.
If I had a different car other than the frs brz it would probably be a s550. Both have huge aftermarket support which is a must for me. It's just I'd rather have a 15k$ used frs with $15k in mods for $30k, rather than a stock mustang in for $30k.

The G35 and G37 are turd cars. They scream, "I'm a poseur!" quite loudly. E90 BMW all day long for a comfy but sporty RWD car. I'd be perfectly happy with a 328i. Reliable and cheap.

But I'm sticking with the FRS. Far more fun in stock and near stock form than any of the other choices.

The mk5 GTI doesn't have a LSD and even on the track I never had problems putting down power to the ground (or maybe I wasn't going fast enough to experience traction)

Yes the Si is uglier, but it is 300 pounds lighter, has a much slicker shifter, and the steering feels more deliberate. The mk5/6 is heavier but much slower to respond, the mk7 feels lighter and does not offer as much feedback, the Si steering really felt the best. It also is a much easier car to work on, so that's also another plus.

Straight line speed does not concern me. There'll always be a guy with higher boost, aftermarket header/downpipe, etc.

I've tracked my friend's E46 M3 a bunch of times and it is a lot of fun and has been surprisingly reliable for him (although personally I prefer lighter cars).

If you're considering something as large/heavy as an E46 M3, I'd heavily consider a Camaro or Mustang, especially the SS and GT. Both have more performance than an M3 with better reliability and newer features.
There is quite a gulf in price (and mileage) between the E36 and E46 M3...since this'll be a project/track car I'm leaning towards the lighter E36, even if the US engine is a little lackluster.

The Si is definitely the sportier car, unless you're talking straight line speed. The +300 lbs will be felt in the corners more, but the 60 (or more...VW loves to understate dyno values) additional lb-ft of torque makes up for the weight

I actually see the E90 as more of the poser car. For most drivers, I feel like the Infiniti is the better car, but more plebs lust after the BMW roundel than the Infiniti logo.

Hahaha a GT3/GT4 are pretty much the only cars that I REALLY want that really speak to me and that I would happily step away from my 86 for.

Unfortunately I don’t make that kind of money so it’s not really in the cards for me, at least right now.

There’s nothing else out there on the market that gets me excited right now. While not RWD, I really did enjoy my 2016 STI I had that I actually sold my 2013 FRS for. Definitely the best all around car I’ve owned.

But unless the new one is a GIGANTIC leap forward in terms of durability and performance, I have no interest in getting into another one.

I am on the same page I would love a GT3/GT4 probably the only car that I always find myself coming back to, but yeah that price tag... apparently I gotta keep the kids fed and the lights on lol

But that's why I am coming back to the 86 as well.. if mine ever shows up. I'm actually waiting for an update from Toyota right now.

I really think these cars will be so much more appreciated when every car that roles of the assembly line is full of nannies, sensors, electronic, automatic everything boring ass couches on wheels.

I'm all for comfy safe commuting and all that but that's what my other car is for lol.

Keep up the good work on your car, looking forward to it's evolution!

Get a Zupra. Toyota is discounting them because of the upcoming 2021 model.

If I didn't insist on having a manual trans, I'd be overwhelmed with choices. Alas, I've driven the best of automatics and I don't see myself settling for one. It makes any car more fun at road-legal speeds.

Around here, the G35/37 are "I graduated from Hondas and Subarus. Look at me!" cars.

And they drive miserably. I mean, better than an SUV, but...

I'm not sure where your "300 lb" myth came from. Googled my 2017 GTI - it's 2972 - 3086 lb (depending on options). Google 2020 Si Sedan - it's 2906 lb. Not remotely close to 300 lb.

I'd recommend you drive the revised Mk7 GTI with the active (oversteering) LSD and larger brakes. Was a huge improvement over the 2015 model. The Si is a good match for the earlier Mk7 GTIs, but not the newer ones with the trick LSD. And the GTI has considerably larger brakes than the Si. Hell they're larger brakes than those found on my Cayman.

But if you're looking for a track project car, I would just stay away from FWD altogether. Turbo as well.

i was comparing it to my mk5, with 4 doors and sunroof comes close to 3200 lbs.

The mk7 is indeed lighter, from 3034 lbs to 3126 depending on configuration (https://newspress-vwusamedia.s3.amaz...8494f0ae0f.pdf)

I did drive a 2017 with sport package on the appropriate roads. I did like the quicker ratio steering, but it didn't quite have the feel that my mk5 did. If do a side-by-side I"m sure I was going faster than the mk7 but it didn't make me feel more connected with the car, which is what I'm after.
