What did you settle on for hardness? Did you just quench with vegetable oil?

Yup, went w canola oil. Hardness, if this graph is correct, we did Rockwell hardness of 57~58.

it was somewhere near that hot here as well today. the official temp was 86. but it was 88% humidity..

i worked outside on the garage. i couldn't take looking at the crappy door falling apart any more. it required cutting the new door down, widening the opening, and resupporting the main door header.. so about 6-8 hours of work.. the only fun part was that i got to break out the air nailers.

Yeah I know that feel. Here, you feel like you’re in the oven. Quench oil got up to 120 degree without heating it up... which was nice, so I didn’t have to heat it up, but it showed that it was THAT hot under the sun.

There is a reason I buy tons of popsicles for the shop guys. They are on their own for the baby powder though.

57-58 should hold a nice edge and not be too difficult to sharpen.

Welp, ya got the hard part done. A 4'x8' sheet of exterior plywood, couple of barn door hinges, a latch - slap that puppy up there and splash a little paint on it - and you will be done -

Yep, I'd suggest you get right on that, before the fire marshal drives by and gets a look inside of your garage -

I watched a really nice documentary on the BBC about a Japanese swordmaster family.. it was very sweet, capturing the spiritual nature of sword making.. worth a watch if you can find it...
