some guy: Did you buy that new?
the wife : Yes
some guy: Interested in selling it?
the wife : No
some guy: If I give you my number would you call me when you do decide to sell it.
the wife : That might be a long time from now
some guy: I've been told that the best cars to buy are those that have been owned by "Old Folks" from new.
They know the the value of a dollar and take good care of their stuff.
you seriously wouldn't sell the sti for any price? even an astronomical one?

i stopped telling people i won't sell. i just tell them "for the right price" and then remind them they're offering to buy me out, not buying at market value.

older people might take care of their performance vehicles better due to more disposable income, and stable career, but i don't believe that anyone with enough of an interest in performance vehicles regardless of age treats them any better.

that might've been true back when grandma could 'accidently' order a 'nice coupe' that happens to be an olds 442 for going to the grocery store and church once a week-- i know of a few cases of supra's like that as well--it was a relatively tame looking car in stock form.

but all the new performance vehicles are too stylistically different for that to be as common of an occurrence anymore.

Idk, someone who really likes plaid seats might wind up with a GTI. The type R civic looks a lot like the base model if you don't have good vision and forget about things like the big wing. And you can probably forgive people who take a look at the twins and assume they are performance vehicles.

The whole "granny was confused about what car she was getting" thing always was a bias from people who's granny may just do that so they can't even imagine that all grannys are not created equal and some WANT those cars.
My grandma used to totally smoke young guys in their Camaros and Mustangs when she drove the Galaxie. She was a huge NASCAR fan and drove like it right up until she couldn't drive anymore.
My mother had several muscle cars over the years. Also a huge NASCAR fan she would gladly take anybody on in her 427 '66 T-Bird. It was so done up that when she started it all the windows in the neigbourhood would shake!
The Toyota dealer near work has sold 4 new Supras. All of them to women over 50! They knew exactly what the wanted.
I have read that over 60% of Mustang sales are to middle aged women and watching who drives them I would have to think that is accurate.
Let's be honest here. In most cases the guys that are the stereotypical performance car owners can't afford to buy these cars new. It is the older and often female crowd that buys them. Hell, even the 86 has a much higher female ownership that it appears.Becuase grannies don't gather at meets, hang out at the track or frequent forums doesn't mean they don't exist.

The odds of finding a car that was beat on by somebody in our age range is just as good as a current 18 year old. Same applies to finding a car that has been meticulously maintained since there are young guys that baby their cars and old guys that still drive the crap outta them.
My father was born in 1910 and my mother in 1914 so yes, they lived through it all. Their experiences obviously had a great effect on me. However, that wasn't really my point. The guy who made the comment was in his late 30's, maybe even 40's and to him, we were "OLD Folks".
I guess we are but I don't think like I imagine "Old Folks" think. I know we both feel older than we wish some days but I still laugh at fart jokes and like looking at naked ladies. (I can't speak for the wife.)
