Evo found it lacking too but against this year's crop of cars if shone ie more authentic less complicated more analogue.. There were a few cars that Evo wanted on the test but couldn't get them in time. If the Honda had rocked up we may have seen a different top 3.

Refreshing change not seeing a Porsche in the top 3..

That throw-in comment about the GR86 being what the Miata should have been is interesting. Reminded me of what Top Gear (another UK magazine) said in their comparison.

I’m in the MX-5, roof firmly up and feeling almost as cramped as the Caterham. The seats are nearly as flat as the engine, and considerably flatter than the cornering attitude. The problem with the MX-5 is that it’s sporty by association. We assume it’s a driver’s car because it’s rear-drive, manual, small and light (over 200kg less than the Toyota), but we’re wrong. This is top-line, top-down, superficial driving satisfaction and the GR86 shows it up ruthlessly. The Mazda’s body surfs on its chassis, it rolls and lurches, and nothing quite works with the diligence and precision you hope. Apart from the gearbox, which rivals the Caterham in the snickety shift stakes. If the engine wasn’t so criminally characterless, the drivetrain could be the MX-5’s salvation.
I would have thought the UK magazines would love the ND2 Miata being something of a throwback to old British roadsters, but they seem almost critical of it. I guess their handling preferences skew more towards a buttoned-down approach.

I think that "we" may have moved on from the twee motors of yesteryear..

A rare moment when you make a car better without really making it worse. So many manufacturers go on to make a next generation car better than its predecessor, only to make it worse in other ways.

I think the only negative i really hear about this car is that its steering feels less communicative than the first gen....

I haven't been able to test drive one yet (maybe by 2025?), but from everything I've seen there are only two desirable revisions to the 2nd gen that they didn't make IMO - 1) for the MT: the addition of a rev matching toggle (Toyota already has one in their stable for the Corolla); 2) improved sound tuning on the engine - it still sounds like a thrashing machine, and the "augmented" engine note just makes it worse.

i can't speak on the latest model, but the 1st gen is stupid easy to rev match.

i really just blindly peg the throttle and let off the clutch and 99% of the time it puts the revs right where they need to be.

unfortunately, given the d-4s diret injection system, there's no great way to make the motor sound good. my tacoma sounds the same way, though it's got a nice tone to it when the secondary intake duct opens up above 3.5k rpm.

imo, the missed opportunity with augmented engine sounds is the lack of being able to make one's car sound like anything within the brands stable, past or present. i mean, who wouldn't want their new car to sound like colin mcrea's tuned impreza?

Agile handling, strong performance among with their potential for modification did the job
