Makes perfect sense when you put it like that.

Going to be a while. They are still in the house; still too cold at night. They tell me the end of the month for warm weather crops.

I tilled about a 25x25 area. Going to plant some corn, beans, squash, and herbs too. A previous owner said everything he ever tried to grow there grew great.

With US states desperate for COBOL programmers, IBM is offering free training

Wow, I thought it was only some Australian Government databases that still used COBOL.

No. It's still the backbone of MRP systems everywhere. I have witnessed many businesses try and fail to replace it.

FedEx dropped off my desk. Like, literally left it on the door step of the unit #1 at my building. Which happens to be right off the curb of a super busy street that is known for package thieves. They didn’t even let my 90 year old neighbor know they were doing that in front of his doorway.. and he had to come up to my unit (around back and up a staircase) to tell me it was there. So I had to drag the 60 pound, 50 inch long/30inch deep table to the back of the building and up 18 steps. My wrists are now bruised and my back is sore.

But hey at least the delivery guy practiced good social distancing! /s

Current setup. I’m waiting on a monitor arriving later in the week but I now have a home “office” like my boss said last week I should do to increase productivity during this time.

Good looking desk. -

About you having to carry a 60 pound object up 18 steps, floods my mind with back in the day stories ....... I will just tell you the ending to them all "and it was snowing and it was up hill both ways".

this has probably been true for at least 30 years. The company I worked for in the 80s was so desperate for Cobol programmers they were the most highly paid IT employees below VP level and went into a full panic when all 8 of them (hired at the same time and had worked on the same critical system for their entire careers) threatened to retire at the same time if they didn't get a 25% raise. They got their raise but the company finally replaced the system over the 3 years of their contract.

It does take a bit of skill because it's so structured, but really a good programmer can program in any language with a manual and a little time, well except maybe APL and assembly language. I've done all three, would much rather do Cobol.
