Probably next to the table out of frame since it would be a whole block.

Just a small observation.
I have a new-ish, current gen Sony mobile phone. The camera app is quite impressive with its basic camera controls. I've occasionally read phone reviews and their associated camera performance and been impressed with the way articles have describe phone camera capability. When I have a look at a pic taken with the phone and then review it on the phone I think gee, that's impressive but when I review the pic on my pc (27" 2k monitor) it just falls apart. I had thought that phone pics had to a large extent caught up to "proper" cameras but I guess when one is looking at a pic on a 6 inch screen one can get away with a lot. Sony Xperia 5 V.

Some company default cameras are offloading things to cloud and AI processing.
They'll do it unless you tell them not to, til they do it anyway. So progress. Wow. Have a look at Open Camera on F-droid. It doesn't do a whole lot, but it's on device if that makes a difference.

The image quality from a sensor the size of a thumbnail will never be able to match the quality of an image from a much large sensor(10+ times the surface area), given equal technologies..
That being said, the vast majority of people only care about seeing the image on a phone screen, or maybe an iPad, so Phone Camera's are putting real Camera's out to pasture none-the-less.. People's standards are really low in general anymore, and convenience trumps quality and the effort required to learn how to use an actual camera seals their fate..

Got a slide scanner to digitize all my dad's collections.
Had one two years ago that crapped the bed on the first day, so I sent it back. The new one is Kodak branded, but still similar physically. It's held up past the initial day though. One dubious feature is that it has no memory and as soon as you clear the SD card it starts the file name sequence at 001 again. Gosh! that's so useful with a pile of slides yet to do. Spent the better part of yesterday consulting my learning programming books to remember what that's like again. Got it running on my computer using a local counter init without alzheimers. Now I can try to make a dent in all the slide magazines kicking around.

Some of those converters don’t have much resolution but may be enough to save the memories. I have been putting off scanning both my dads slides dating back to the mid 50’s and my own from the late 70’s. I get quite pissed off at the dust I find after a test run on a few slides and drop the project for another time. I have a slide duplicator to attach to either a 40 or 60 MM lens depending on the camera sensor size. ... Master procrastinator at work! I used to do 8*10 Cibachrome prints from my slides back in the day, That process cost a fortune and the fumes possibly shortened my life expectancy as well although those prints should outlive me.. |

I'm saying F_the_dust and shoving them through.
If there's a stray hair or lint, I'll blow it out and continue. I contend that they look period correct and old-timey. Yeah! That's the ticket! If some of them can be made of use, then I'll spend a bit of time shopping them. Thumb drives for xmas.

I've scanned a few slides and it amuses me when I go looking for exif info of the digital pictures. Trying to arrange them by Date Taken doesn't work either lol.

Unedited pic from the phone. I'll edit the RAW files later and see if they come out better than the phone's "auto" mode.

Sure is quiet on this old forum, I hope am not waking anyone up.
These guys did. Was up to La Malbaie & Clermont to catch some rallying two weeks ago, tried out some spots a bit different than what I usually do. Was lucky for the weather as my Friday day long road trip up was mostly done in heavy rain and some fog in the higher elevations. Clearing out around supper when the opening festivities started, Saturday was sunny but a touch above freezing. Some shots from that : Some follow a WRC champs wisdom “when in doubt ...” A Peugeot 208 R4 was present from Overseas... Seems there will be another one in the next 2 weeks in Bancroft rumors have it, with a young Max McRea... Last edited by The Red One; 11-10-2024 at 02:48 PM. |

I recently bought a RX100M7 as a back-up (it is still in the box) because of the fear that the RX line is on its last last legs. The much larger RX10M4 has been discontinued. I still regularly look at new camera websites waiting for the release of a compact large sensor camera in a body the size of the RX100's. I love being able to put my camera in my jean's back pocket.
From Sydney trip in August.

My beloved wife says I have a tripod problem. I don't know what she is talking about.
I do know there is a Benro table-top tripod that is on the shopping list. Soooo looking forward to getting it! Edit. There's one missing from the pic.

You Captain, have a stability obsession issue...
Quite the stash, I think you out ran me with your collection of 3 legged support! I have 3 tripods going from a table top I carry most of the time and mostly forget that I have it, a mid size Manfrotto 190XB to a huge Induro CF GIT505XXL with gimball. Too bad I don't use them much. The few times when I would really need one I opted out to carry one that day. I also have 2 Monopods that I used to use quite a bit in the years past which I find awkward in my present use. (try following fast planes or birds with one attached to camera!) Bought my second one because I forgot where I stored my old beat up stickered one. When I travel I like to have an old tabletop/clamp that I had purchased in the late 70's basically a carpenters clamp with 3 metal legs that can be screwed in when not secured inside the clamp. Never got into the gorilla pod thing: they reminded me when I used to play with dolls (GI Joe , Gumby) with wire body parts that would break off with use. Now we need bags to carry all that whether we need another one or not... |
