So the Yaris GR4 will not come stateside, but the hot Corolla variant will have AWD and a manual according to this article....

The Drive Article here

Nice!

I have high suspicion of the validity behind that. I could believe a Corolla with the Yaris motor, but Toyota has a history of short changing us here so the full bells and whistles, I don't believe. Though if it does come with that, it would put it up against the WRX for sure.

Me too actually, considering real automotive news is running thin and media is scrambling to publish anything worth clicking on.

But there is hope that the Corolla will have AWD, which would be perfect for me. As much as I love my BRZ, the long winters here makes me miss AWD so it might be a possibility for a future upgrade.

I just have to get over my gripes with the Corolla in general but I do love me a hot hatch.

From https://www.autoblog.com/2020/05/29/...hot-hatch-awd/
Quote:
By any name, the hatch just got a lot more exciting if Best Car is right in saying the Corolla Sport GRMN will send some of its power to the rear axle, installing the "latest 4WD system that uses an electronically controlled coupling." That sounds like a simpler setup to apportion torque than the 4WD system on the GR Yaris with its locking front and rear differentials.
Smells like a watered down... almost homeopathic offering compared to the Yaris GR.

Yaris GR4

Sounds like a Haldex unit for the rear wheels to me. They’re cheaper and need less maintenance than electronic diffs. They work well to put power to the rears when you need it. Audi, VW, Saab, and Volvo have been using them for decades.

I like small cars, particularly fast ones, but this just doesn't do it for me.

Yeah, I think know what you mean. I have owned Renaults, Peugeots, VWs and fast Fiats.. but I can't bring myself to committing to this one....

I actually really like it. It actually has some personality to it unlike Golfs, and WRX here in the US.

I'm not fan of the shape of compact hatches. My eye sees a shorter wheelbase wagon, which brings up traumatic memories of being a kid in my mother's Mercury Sable station wagon.

The only one I ever looked at and seriously saw myself considering was the VW Scirocco R.

I think if I was going to pick an AWD hot hatch for a daily then I could see myself picking the GR Yaris over the competition because it seems the most hard core.

I owned a 3 door Yaris, and If they bring something over I'd probably buy it now. A CH-R, especially if it looks as good as the current one, would be better than a Corolla to me. Unless they totally screw it up by making it a poseur mobile.
