I always find it funny how people can complain that much about steering feel.
I went from a 1987 MR2 (manual, rack and pinion) to a 2004 S2000. The S2000 relative to the MR2 was absolutely garbage for steering feel but did absolutely NOTHING to hinder me from enjoying the car and pushing the limits at the track. At that point, I realized steering feel is like saying food is super tasty by its appearance alone. Is appearance important? Sure but I wouldn't judge a car alone by just that initial feel. The new twins are not numb by any means. Is it a MR2 feel? No but it can still be precise. You just have to readjust want inputs your brain is taking in to determine position of the car. I wouldn't say the MR2 was more accurate and precise in the ease of landing the car where I want to on a track. The BRZ so far has been very communicative without YELLING IN MY FACE where I'm wrong and hasn't muted out anything that I DO want to know. It truly is a fantastic platform for me to continue my driver development.

HUGE deal for me, if not you. Lack of torsional rigidity and the lack of steering feel ruined the AP2 for me. Didn't like it on the road or track. Tried Koni Yellows, alignments, camber plates, swift springs and nothing. Even a 270mm MOMO wheel. Sold it. Found it to be ao much less than its parts. Most disappointing car I've owned. Lack of steering feel shows me lack of development. I don't think there's ever an excuse for poor steering feel. My opinion anyways. I'd take both an RX8 and a Gen 1 Twin over it. Build quality was amazing. So was the gearbox. Engine wasn't until 6k. Anyways, yeah, good steering feel is a must for me and poor steering feel is a deal breaker.

I feel like it's something auto journalists came up with to complain about and others latch on. "Can I tell what the front tires are doing?" "Yes." "Ok, good to go."

Normally I would agree but driving my 16 BRZ back to back with other cars it becomes pretty evident how good the steering of the twins is.

Did you replace the AP2 steering rack bushings with stiffer AP1 bushings or aftermarket? AP1 steering lacked feel but was quick and precise, which I appreciated on the road and at the track. Loved mine, kept it for 12 years/240k miles.

I didn't. Also owned it in between an Elise and an RX8. So it felt like a weak chassis. Had an Evora prior to that abd its ruined me for life on steering feel. The wheel also super thick. Replaced it.
