I got this for Xmas back ~1974. 200mph! Maybe scale mph with a track running down from the roof, but still I'm a lifelong motorhead and have never had anything against the idea of electric cars...

tesla has a 10' cable version charger. it's cheaper, so i've run into it a few times.

but the other issue is the difference in chargers. tesla has their own plug standard, and because the port location is different, the homeowners expectations for the location is entirely different as well.

it's literally the apple/windows, vhs/beta debate, but on a much larger physical scale.

the specific problem i'm starting to run into is people desiring to pre-wire houses for it. but everyone's got different opinions of whether everyone on the planet ought to pull in, or back into a garage stall, and depending on house construction can entirely alter where the charger is available to install. none of them want a cord ran along the ground either, which means it has to be as close to the charge port as possible...

eventually a typical standard will emerge, but the tech is fledgling, and opinions run rampant, so it's closer to the wild west for the time being.

I have a bigger problem. My fusebox and electric meter is in the basement on the opposite side of the house from my garage, and there is no direct access to the garage from that route (garage is on a slab).

So, I'm probably dealing with a 50ft or greater run, plus some portion of it running outside the house.

I'm also have a basically full fusebox. There is one 240V connection left from where we remodeled the kitchen and went from a separate stove/oven to a single unit.

that's a pretty standard construction layout for the midwest as well. and one of the largest hurdles.

dealers want to state a flat fee for charger install, but a house with a panel 2' from where the charger is going would only be about an hour of work and $150 in parts. if the panel is more like yours-- 30-70' away, through a basement, #6 wire is $1.60/foot and on the rise, need 2-3 of them(tesla's are 2+ground, other chargers are 3+ground), plus a #10 ground at $0.68/foot...

just the material cost can rise into figures with a comma in them, and that doesn't even account for labor. so either we way under-estimate the long runs and become a charity organization, or rape the easy runs and they get angry--we could do everything to explain that we charge a flat rate for every customer for the job, and some jobs cost significantly more, but that's just going to make them angrier that they paid 4-figure prices to offset someone else's charger install, and we were only there for an hour...

i've gotten lucky on the last few, with either a spare pipe we can take over, or the basement drywalled ceiling is dropped for mechanicals in spots that i can fish across the space.

Assuming I follow through on my Lyriq purchase, I will get a $1,500 rebate towards installation of a charger so I'm hoping that will cover most of the cost.

(The other option is 2 year charging on EVGo, but There's no way I'll do $1,500 of remote charging in 24 months.)

Just picked an Bolt EUV for the wife/family. So far we love it. Perfect little car for a family of 4. Our Kids are young so this will last us. with 7 year bumper to bumper extended warranty our OTD cost was 35K after all rebates(and counting the 2K CA rebate). This is an LT with Leather. Best Spec for Bolt IMO for value IMO.

I was considering the ramifications of the lithium-sulfur battery that is 3x the capacity for the same weight...

The Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus has a battery that is 54kWh and weighs 3,648lbs, where the battery weighs 715lbs, and the car has 272 miles of range. With 3x the capacity, that could be a capacity of 162kWh and a range of 816 miles, which would be nice, but unless someone is really traveling far and doesn't have access to charging at home, or unless someone is towing like they probably would in an EV truck, such range is overkill. If we wanted the same range in the same car then we could just remove two thirds of the battery capacity to get back down to 54kWh, but at a third the weight, so the new battery would weigh 238lbs or 477lbs less, and that means the car would now weigh 3,171lbs, which is pretty light for a premium vehicle. But there is more. If the goal is to provide the same specs in terms of performance and range, well, 477lbs of less weight means the car should accelerate faster and have better range, so in that case, the car could have smaller motors and an even smaller battery. I wouldn't be surprised if the car weighed around 3,000lbs and had the same specs in acceleration and range with an even smaller battery capacity of say 45kWh. Could that mean it would charge faster too? Probably, and that is because there is less total capacity.

I'm hopeful that it will be possible to have an EV Miata with a 250+ mile range and 250-300hp and be sub 2500lbs or lighter with such batteries.

I agree any new tech needs to balance weight reduction and range improvement, but not extreme range. Of course, everyone's optimal range differs.

I'd prefer to have a vehicle with not less than a 300 mile range, but would prefer 500. 500 meets all of my single day round trip needs and most of my single day one way needs. I'm good with one charging stop on a full days drive though so 300 works.

More efficient batteries potentially gives the buyer options. Making the battery you describe for the Tesla modular means the buyer could choose between, as an example, three ranges that are all useful but let the buyer decide what range/weight/etc they feel meets their needs.

Once the technology catches up, the freedom of the layout of an EV could make for some very engaging sports cars. Motors and be placed just right for a bespoke sports cars without the huge expense usually associated with such a development for an ICE.

Sidenote, I signed paperwork to have solar installed on my roof in November. Was finally installed over the course of 6 hours on April 9th. Still isn't functional, inspections by the installer and local utility company (Duke Energy) aren't complete. This is complete bullsh*t.
