In the patreon video TheSmokingTire just put up he talks about the BRZ they are reviewing. He says it is basically identical to the GR86, he couldn't even tell you any differences between the two.
He got the limited with PS4s, and said an M2 comp was trying to keep up with him in the canyons and could not. He did say that he wasn't sure of the driving skills of the person in the M2. Some quotes: positive "I was incredibly impressed in the canyons with the pace" "They fixed the engine. The engine is good!" "the power was great" "a very impressive product" "would strongly recommend" gripes "I wish there was lumbar support" "it needs knee pads" They talk about it for a few minutes, would post it if I could. They speculate that it has more power than the published numbers.

That's the dyno they refer to when they are talking about it. They don't seem surprised and speculate that the published numbers are a 'worst case scenario' output.

No way to be faster than an M2 comp. It should be related to the driving skills of the specific person. We had a member here with a BRZ with full exhaust and E85. The car was giving on the dyno 198rwhp/168rwtq. He switched after to an M2 comp car and he was saying to be the next logical step after the BRZ. This M2 has a detuned version of the M3/M4 engine outputting 410+hp.

I think the takeaway here is that it's impressive that it is even possible to make that comparison. In a slower car the M2 comp would wipe the floor with you, even with a novice driver. EDIT: Keep in mind this is in the canyons where cornering speed is much more important than power numbers. In my old FRS the cornering speeds were unbelievable after I put wider sticky tires on it.

Driver skill, willingness to push, and tires. Have to equalize those to make any kind of real comparison. But yeah I’d expect once those are factored in the m2c would be much faster.

This 100%, it's very hard to learn the limits of the M2C if you don't have access to a track. The HP is great, but. you also reach ridiculous speeds very quickly which makes learning on the street challenging.

I keep checking Matt's channel each day. Really want to hear his take after having the car for a week.

On the podcast yesterday he mentioned that the BRZ video would be up in a couple of weeks. I don't know what the time requirements are for making and editing a video, but it seems like a long time to me lol. I am also eager to see it.

Please note, I am NOT saying that he is being irresponsible but he's always finding some sort of traffic versus on the track which we'd get a more thorough understanding. That said, Matt is a very capable driver too so I trust his commentary even on street roads but the M2 part, like he said, would be HEAVILY asterisk'ed due to driver skill on the BRZ's part. The twin chassis' were always their immense strong point and now with Gen2, they got ever so slightly better even. And better yet, the chassis is a truly dedicated one whereas most others aren't or have to be compromised for other models (eg: Miata is a convertible, CTR is still a Civic, etc.). Loving what Subie and Toyota have done here. Kaizen indeed.
