Essex/AP Racing Sprint Kit proven in endurance racing by Toyota engineers
Hey Guys,
I wanted to share a post we just published on our Essex Blog. We've heard some chatter by competitors over the years about what our Essex Designed AP Racing Sprint Brake Kit can't do: "It's too small/lightweight, you need a rear kit, the discs won't last, etc." We're here to tell you again that is pure nonsense. A group of Toyota engineers from their Arizona proving grounds contacted us last summer about helping with the brakes on their 86 racecar. They installed and pummeled our Sprint Kit in the NASA Western Endurance Racing Championship, in which a typical race would be four hours long. They were even on track to run the entire 25 Hours of Thunderhill on one set of pads, but an unfortunate failure (unrelated to brakes) ended their race early. They sealed up the 2018 championship with our kit, and provided some great feedback along the way. Quote:

Cool! A couple questions though, are they just running stock oem rotors in the rear? Also how are they fitting RPF1s over the Sprint kit, I thought they had insufficient clearance?

To our knowledge, yes they are just running OEM rear discs. There are at least six different variants of the RPF1 fit over our Sprint Kit without a spacer (bold red below). Wheel fitment data from our website: Confirmed wheels that fit our Essex/AP Sprint Kit without a spacer:

rpf1 17x9 +35 absolutely does not clear my good sir or madam.
i bought them based off this thread and then had to install extended studs and buy 8mm spacers. |

Per idea from my friend. Wondering if perhaps you ordered the 2022+ kit, which has a different bracket and rotor. Might make the rpf1s not fit anymore. Last edited by Breezio; 11-18-2024 at 11:05 PM. |

Indeed, sounds like there was a kit revision as I also have a friend with the original kit on 17x9 +35 RPF1
Also, fun to see the TAPG car again ![]()

The fitment templates they have on their website show the 2022 kit being about 8mm more outward than the older kit. I bought RPF1s in 18x9.5 and the 2022 kit not realizing they were that different and thinking I was being smart, it didn't work out. 8mm spacer looks right when I took rough measurements too.

Maybe this topic has been covered before. I'm considering the AP sprint kit for my 2013 FRS. The car sees 2-3 track weekend per season.
I know there is no such thing as a street/track pad. If I want to switch pads at the track (or before I go to the track), what sets of pads would be recommended to avoid possible bedding issues? |

I know at least Carbotech/G-Loc and Ferodo have compatible street and track pads that they claim can share rotors and don't require bedding in between pads (1521/XP10+, GS-1/R10+, DS2500/DS1.11/DS3.12). I'm sure other brake manufacturers have similar options.
I run separate rotors as well, though, and swap at home before the track, so the drive to the track and back is on track pads. It's not ideal, but unless you go really extreme on the pads you shouldn't have more issues than a lot of brake dust and slightly increased wear. |

I try to bunch up my track days for that reason - leave the track pads and rotors on for a few weeks and street them in between HPDEs. My daughter calls it "bus brakes".

I know people who daily the ds1.11 so you could probably get away with that for street and track.
I’m currently pad swapping at each track day and even though it doesn’t take that long and I have help I would like to stop. So if I go bbk I’m going to give the ds1.11 a shot. Funny I won’t get to really experience how easy it is to swap pads on a bbk if I’m only running one pad lol
