Its the only other thing that is relevant to the 2nd gen up to this point.

The first thing that was relevant was the press release that said that Subi and Toyota are collaborating on a 2nd gen.

Outside of whats been floating around the rumor mill and the confirmation that there is a 2nd gen, there is absolutely no new information about it.

Because the clickbaits need something to post to make money. As there is no real news they have to grasp at any little thing they can and add their spin to it so that people will actually visit their site. They don't care that it is many years old and fiction even then as long as people keep coming back.

The world's automotive sector was already in decline even before the pandemic. The Asian companies have been bleeding cash for months. The European ones are already up against the ropes. The North American ones are starting to stumble. There is no new info because in all probability there is little or no movement on many projects to report on.

Yes, they just announced a few months ago that they were making a new 86/BRZ but that may as well have been 20 years ago with how the economic climate has changed in the interim.

Pretty sure that at this point every week that goes by without any form of official update means that people are not going to like what is said when they eventually do issue a formal press release.

I fail to see any motivation in releasing a 2nd gen cheap sports car in this economical environment for Toyota especially when their product portfolio already has Supra with two engine options.

Only if continuing partnership with Subaru is desirable to Toyota, a second gen 86 might make some sense. But they own part of Subaru as well and they might leave 2nd gen BRZ exclusive to Subaru.

If anybody is interested in buying a twin, I would buy it now.

We could end up with a car like Honda CR-Z as the next generation.

Not gonna lie guys, I’m really concerned that this pandemic could derail the next gen 86. I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised when Toyota and Subaru announced the 2nd gen, but a lot has changed since then. Economies are tanking, people are scared, discretionary spending has dried up. How hard would it be to justify continuing with developing a relatively low volume sportscar in today’s market (where all car sales are down), but sportscars are worse than ever?

I really hope I’m wrong, and Toyota/Subaru deliver us a new twin next year. But I gotta be honest, I wouldn’t bet any of my own money on it. During uncertain economic times like this manufacturers tend to jettison pet, low volume projects like sportscars and focus on their core range, which in Toyota and Subaru’s case is regular family cars and SUVs. Again, I hope I’m wrong, because I was planning on upgrading to the 2nd gen to replace my 2015 86.

Toyota North America just released their March sales figures. No surprise everything is down. The Supra did outsell the 86 by 35% (273 units vs 202) although I'm not sure either is anything to write home about.

Of course, sales of everything were down.

Not sure if the Toyota NA states include Toyota Southeast which is a different franchise.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. Sports car sales have been declining for a while now. This covid stuff is going to go on for a little while (I think the cuve will begin to flatten by mid-May personally) but who knows how long it'll take for economies to recover. Who knows what kind of regulations the government will enforce when this is all done too.. because we know how much government likes to overstep and stuff their hands into the pockets of others. But I digress.

I just don't see it happening. Given the fact that there was absolutely nothing out there on a test car being driven or anything like that either, I was always under the impression, that IF we got another 86/BRZ, it wouldn't be for another couple years; like late '21-'22. But given everything that's happening, I can't see how it would make any fiscal sense to continue investing millions of dollars into a low volume sports car in an economy that's continuing to decline, filled with people who already weren't really all that interested in sports cars in the first place.

If the summer 2021 release of the model year 2022 timeline is correct, they may already have non-cancellable contracts with suppliers.

@Tcoat?
The normal answer to this would be a resounding yes. The answer in the covid era is maybe not.
The parts contracts would have to be in place no later than a year before production. Under normal circumstances they are ironclad and can not be cancelled. In other words if they contracted for 1,000 steering wheels and only 200 car were sold they would still be paying for 1,000 steering wheels.
But...
These are not normal circumstances so the emergency clause built into most contracts would come into effect (and this has happened for many including us) which would make it possible for the automakers to reduce quantities or even totally cancel whole orders without penalty. The wording of these contracts is pretty precise so that the automakers can just raise and lower quantities at will but of course they have to cover such possibilities as we see today.

Interesting, i guess it's not in the supplier's best interest to bankrupt the car companies.

But the cancellation of too many contracts could very easily bankrupt the smaller parts companies. It happened in 2008 and that was a drop in the bucket compared to this time around.

The sales of the BRZ are on NASIOC and they are pretty bad as well.
