I think it's more noticeable when you install a bucket seat. If you line up the seats with the pedals the steering wheel is off to the right. Stupid transmission tunnel.

This tutorial was designed so a rookie could do this.

That said like in the disclaimer working on airbag and safety equipment is a higher risk than working on brakes. You need them to work. Period if you are uncomfortable I would have a professional shop do the work.


This spacer physically works with the 17 and up models but it does not have the wiring harness needed to maintain the radio controls on the car.

@Clutch Dog thank you for the valuable information. Until now, I haven't ever wanted to listen to radio in this car; and don't think I will. So the buttons on the steering wheel are already useless to me. I'll try to find a way to ship this to Turkey. But first, I should convince my wife; it's the hardest part

I just tried putting mine on my 2017 BRZ, and I was not able to get my airbag back on. The airbag wires are a tad too short for the airbag to go back in and go low enough to line up the 3 pins. I guess I'll have to extend my airbag wires to make this work. And the steering wheel controls for sure need an extension but i can live without those

The steering spacer has been on my to do list for a couple of years. Finally, I bought one and installed it. For the freakishly tall among us it's a revelation. With the stock set up, to get the seat far enough back to fit my legs and reclined enough to accommodate my melon, I'd be stretching my arms to reach the steering wheel. No more. I can finally set the car up to fit me rather than the other way around.

A couple of observations, 1. the added two inches makes the turn signal and wiper stalks noticeably farther away. Not a big deal - big hands usually accompany general largeness.

2. The added distance puts a serious stretch in the horn wire. I battled mine for quite a while and ultimately admitted defeat and fabbed a 2" jumper wire. [949 guys - including a short jumper would help those of use with big clumsy mitts]

My only issue is the steering wheel is slightly cocked - about 2 to 3 degrees to the left. It's far less than a full spline's worth. Not sure what the cause is. My guess is that random variation in manufacturing could easily be the culprit. I tried the next spline and the difference is far greater in the other direction. It's not a big deal - I'll get it sorted at the next visit to the alignment shop.

Thanks for the write-up, I got my spacer in today and installation took only 20 minutes using this guide. I can't believe I didn't have this before, its so nice being able to drive without my knees hitting the wheel and getting in and out is now easier.

How was it getting the horn, airbag, and steering wheel control wires on? I'm assuming being a 2018 BRZ, you got the extended harness?

I plan on installing it as soon as the weather warms up a bit here.

Really, only the horn will need an extension of some kind. Mine keeps getting disconnected though. I'm going to do those heat-shrink things to get the wire to stay.

You ran into this issue on a 2017+?

I only ask because "Var" above was having problems with all wires including the ABS.

Hey sorry for the super late response. I did get the extended wire harness and it was very easy, plug and play. You do have to play around a little with fitting the airbag back on because there is a little more wire sitting around.
