Holy shit that's a long plier. I tried regular pliers but it just seemed to squeeze the outer part of the piece instead of pushing in the flaps that are slightly recessed.

My cousin is a robotics engineer so we're going to make sure it's structurally sound, sturdy, durable and most importantly safe!
If you don't have an IG or similar for your car you should set one up! Would be interesting to follow the progress of this, unless you guys are going to keep it relatively quiet till it's done.

I'll post the progress on my main IG account. This is really just a fun project more than anything else, and if people are interested in it and would like it too then great!

Put some tape on the ends, to make "high spots" to push in more on the clips. Sort of like this:

Got it! This was the pic that did it and super easily too.

I continued with the rest of the disassembly. I took measurements, but we're also going to 3D scan the pieces to create a CAD model we can modify to be taller. The pylons are definitely plastic with metal reinforcement for the screws to attach to. Pretty easy to disassemble actually.

Removed the little pieces that sit ontop of the wing. They pop right off with a plastic panel tool.

Little rubber piece. Not sure if this will be necessary with the higher spoiler.

Please post the results! I really like the 17 wing, yet I also had the idea of having it raised a little bit higher. Exited to see how this turns out!

Kind of a long shot but I'm guessing the MY17 spoiler doesn't match up properly with the 13-16 spoiler bolt pattern, does it?

It looks like the two bolts on both sides of the trunk match up pretty close, but the 17 spoiler has an additional clip above the bolts, whereas 13-16 has additional clips that run down the width of the trunk.

In my rough estimation you could attach a 17 wing to a previous year BRZ if you patch the trunk clip holes

I'm in for following this. I've been talking on/off with engineering friends about this over the last 6 months. I just haven't pulled the trigger on any development yet.

A side note. Subaru strengthened the '17 trunk lid on the sides to help support the weight/downforce of the new spoiler. So while you could retrofit it to an older trunk, it might deform.

They specifically designed the new spoiler to complement the car aerodynamically with what's going on up front, not sure why you'd wanna mess with that too much.

Initial sketches - not CAD yet. Let me know if you guys like any in particular. It's hard to judge without seeing it in physical form or on the car, so we're going to narrow it down and prototype just a few of them. Happy friday!

Here is what the 2.5x looks like from the back (roughly)
