Install questions with VIS duckbill trunk on '17+ car
Seen lots of videos and how to's ob installing carbon trunks on older cars and I'm comfortable with how to handle the backup camera but nobody seems to cover the opener/sensor. Anyone done this and can advise or can point me to a DIY/How-to/write-up?

Opener/sensor? Do you mean the latch? Cus that's just two bolts, easy peasy.

Not the latch, unless I guess that's what it's called. I'm talking about the proximity sensor button/popper/opener/etc. that works with the proximity key (for push button ignition cars).

I've been told being a lowly '14, I'm both too poor and too out of touch to be able to do anything with the new cars.
So apparently you're the last hope of anyone modding a '17! Good luck! * The entire license plate light/keyslot/button assembly should migrate over and bolt up directly to the new trunk. Yay for standardized parts!*

Appreciate that but based on the pics below of the carbon trunk and stock one (albeit with the garnish still on) am I gonna have to make a huge cut for that opener/sensor? |

looks exactly like it ought to me.
minus the garish welding failure, this is what an oem trunk looks like at nearly the same step without the buttonpad/keyslot/subaru logo plastic assembly:

I'll have to take my garnish off to confirm but basically I'm looking at cutting a hole the size of that sensor? |

no, don't cut any holes. the bolts line up.
this trunk garnish piece from your other trunk needs to just be bolted on. https://www.ebay.com/itm/12423211358...Bk9SR4icyeb7YA

Right but that garnish has a cutout for the opener. And I imagine you'd need to cut a hole in the carbon garnish to match and a hole in the trunk to run the wires, no?

you shouldn't need to drill anything. the trunk opener button wires should go through the larger hole near the middle. everything on the 2 trunk lids, despite the differences in brands line up perfectly.
just take your old trunk apart, and put the new one together exactly the same way. edit, oh, you're talking about the carbon garnish that bolts to the trunk lid-- you probably ordered the fr-s version, where you needed the brz version. yes, for that you would need to cut the button into the garnish, but the holes already exist in the lid for the wires.
