So you locked your keys in trunk?

Some notes before I start:
- I have a 2013, I have no idea if the newer models have mastered a better keyless entry/trunk system.

- I've done this twice now - the first time was much easier because the back seat was down.

- Don't try to cram your hands between the back seat and the trunk or you will look like you got into a bar fight. Unless you want it to look like you got in a bar fight, because then by all means, cram away. (See pic for proof).

So you've managed to lock your keys in your trunk. Wow. Here's what you do:

1) Call AAA/road-side assistance/ your weird friend who has the air pumpy pillow thing and a metal stick with a bend at the end.

1a) Don't let AAA say they might not be able to pop open the door for you. Tell the guy/girl that you believe in them and that they need to do the pumpy pillow thing first, then use the metal stick to push down the unlock button.

1b) Make sure to mention that they don't need to spend time scratching up the door handle, that won't open the door. They need to push down the unlock button (it's the one farthest away from you, closest to the steering wheel on the 2013).

2) Once the door has been opened, go ahead and hit that unlock button one more time and unlock all of the doors. Just in case.

3) Now, guess what? The trunk unlock button doesn't work! YAY! Fold down one of your front seats and go ahead and cram yourself into the "back seat".

4a) If your back seat happens to already be folded down, congrats! Go ahead and:

- reach for your keys
- pull a bunch of stuff out of your trunk to get to your keys
- shove yourself into the trunk and reach for the yellow pull tap on the trunk door to open the trunk

- or all of the above, because why not?

4b) Back seat is up and locked in place? Don't bother trying to look for a secret button or try to push in the two buttons back there. They are depressed - but you don't need to get depressed! Take the plastic parts surrounding the buttons and pull them off, going in a motion from the back of the car towards the front. This will allow you to access the two buttons and pull them up simultaneously (just like manual door locks from the 80s!). The back seat will now fold down, giving you access to the trunk. Now go to step 4a and get the hell out of there!

4c) If you had to remove those plastic pieces, here's how I put them back into place - I tilted the back seat towards me, popped up each button, centered it in the plastic piece and then it was easy to pop back into place.

5) Remind yourself not to do this again and wear something with pockets next time.

Another method is to put a spare key in a magnetic box and stick it under the car.

Great story bro!!

If you are prone to stuff like this or paranoid I second Hunfrz suggestion. Last time I used one of those boxes was my new '94 Beretta Z26. Havent needed that since.

Car was a turd btw lol

All these cool kids sure are feisty.

Didn't know about pulling off the plastic parts, thanks for the heads up. Haven't done it yet, but there's always tomorrow.

I never trusted a magnetic box to stay put. I use a zip tie, yes you have to cut it but hopefully you will only need to get to it infrequently.

Ya, I hear that. I used to use baling wire, but then one day I discovered I ran out of baling wire, after I sold the hay baler, so, I've used magnetic boxes for the past 40 years, never had one fall off.

My problem is I can't ever remember where I stuck it …..

Not sure why I would put my key in the trunk to begin with. I have pockets.

I would have just used a spare key.
Not sure why, but I have the urge to say, "Leave the gun, take the cannoli".

Thanks for the story.
I've needed the key in a magnetic box for my van before.
If you leave the key in the ignition and exit by the side door, it doesn't even scream at you.

A pattern key with no electronics would get you in the door or trunk.
