My father's Volvo was rwd; it was a classic example of a barge. It had no steering feel, slow off the line, rolled like a metric shitload of lard.
My slightly warm Pug 206, fwd, had beautiful lift off over-steer and was a joy to drive.
The Fiesta ST is very highly regarded despite it being fwd.

Fun > driven wheels.

I've had a lot of fun in FWD, but a lot more fun in RWD. AWD is actually less fun because there's too much grip accelerating out of the corners. But damn do I get home faster. Well, not in the Forester.

Yes, that's what I want. Preferably 2-door. Like an AWD Fiesta ST. As for market, if you build it, they will come!

My guess would be a GR Corolla hatch version, exclusively for the North America market.
There is a (hybrid) Euro GR Corolla hatch, which is not much more than a mildly spiced up normal hatch.
Maybe the NA GR Corolla will have version of the hot 3 cylinder Yaris engine, although I doubt they will offer it in AWD.

Well, typically a four seater (not 2+2) that is AWD with a turbocharged engine that can handle some power that is built tough is not light. At least it is not 2800lbs light.

The dimensions are actually similar to the 86, yet it adds a turbocharger system, front axles, front diff and haldex-like clutch pack, and the 86 is pretty cheap over-all, right? The 86 is also not equipped with the power this car has. In order to make it light, it must use expensive parts like carbon fiber and aluminum, or it must be really tinny and cheap.

The fresh bodywork includes a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic roof, plus a bonnet, boot lid and doors made from aluminium. It’s opening the doors and the boot where you really get a sense of how light the GR Yaris is - it feels like there’s nothing to them. The bumpers are thin too - you can flex the plastic with a light press.

It seems like they went cheap, and they went expensive. This is a homologation car, which is why we are seeing such an odd conglomeration of expensive and cheap parts.

We need a good GTI competitor now that the focus ST is gone. Without competition the segment will cease to innovate. Look at the STI since Mitsubishi pulled out.

Who cares? Its something new. At least it's not some revived named turned into a CUV or SUV. I'm fine with no GR Yaris, but anything sporty and new from Toyota is a win in my books.

Honestly I still think about this car all the time. I don't think about the Corolla at all. It's fine, I'm glad it'll be another option. It's just not for me (probably).

By the time the GR Yaris is out maybe air travel will be safe again and I'll do another Scotland trip and drive one.

Subaru and Mitsubishi have been out of WRC for over ten years. When did an Evo win last? I’m surprised Subaru still sells the STI. As good as it is, how much further could they take it without bloating the price? Do they need to?

The segment just borrows a turbocharged engine and plops that in the car. Innovation isn’t really there, as much as, gradual progression of value. That I’ll give you.

Yeah, it’ll be like having a SI Civic or GTI. Better than nothing. I’m sure people will cheer when it gets here like they did with the 86 because it’s better than nothing and something new then they will complain how the GR Yaris is better, the CTR is better, the etc is better, or how it needs this or that like they do with the 86, or how we never get the good version of stuff like the Silvia, Skyline, GR Yaris, etc.

I’m just skipping ahead.
