I think he was making fun of comparing the new Z to something completely different.

Yes. And it was well done. I was trying to avoid saying that I think the 400z looks like $hit, but I forgot just how many other potential competitors there were.

I'm reserving my judgement until I see one in person, as well as it's final production form.

But in general, not a huge fan. But it's RWD and 6sp manual - options are limited.

I actually think it will be killer in person. I already like the profile and rear end

So am I the only one that is concerned that the production car will not be nearly as nice looking as this concept?

I realized that part of what I like about the concept car is the simplicity of the design... but it seems like there are a lot of missing but required elements to make the car street legal.

You are not alone. I would prefer a body coloured roof as well. Not a fan of a blacked out roof on most cars, especially coupes as it tends to hide the overall shape.

That, and the 'classic' looks of the traditional sports cars of the 50s/60s I grew up with were almost always one color.
Right, when the styling is on point a mono colour paint job helps appreciate the lines and details. Different coloured panels breaks up the design, like camo. Who wants camo on their sports car? I dislike the fake carbon wrapped bonnets (hoods) a lot of folk do for the same reason.

This wouldn't keep me from buying a 400Z, but I'd probably look into painting the roof.

I like what I like.
I suspect the production version will have body coloured roof as well as blacked out options. I hope so, black roof would not keep me from considering a 400Z either but I would also want it painted body colour.

like what? 350Z/370Z are quite simplistic too, especially with their bumper designs, most variants have no side vent/curtain, foglights, separate DRLs, etc... The only stuff the concept is missing are things like side markers and maybe door handles if the concept ones are too weird but those are minor details, plus the front amber ones could just be slapped onto the existing headlights much like on the 370z. I think the biggest clues that it is pretty close to being production are the street legal looking sideview mirrors and the bumper/side skirt panel gaps + hood/trunk cutouts all look production ready, not to mention the finished interior.

I was driving and a wide body Genesis with stance stickers and those Roman chariot lug nuts on it. It made me appreciate the coming 400z so much.

Exactly!!

Intrinsic design is harder to get right. Two-tone paint is a cheap quick and dirty way to create visual interest. I admire more a designer who has the talent and took the time to get the fundamental design right. For me there's more visual interest in the lines, curves, creases, etc. than multi-color paint.

The early 1960's Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale comes to mind as one of the most beautiful cars ever. The intrinsic lines are just so right, from any angle. I'm sure the thought of two-tone paint never entered Franco Scaglione's mind when he penned that gorgeous car.

I was referring to side markers in particular, but also the front grill, and as you say minor details... even emblems/badges... it does not take much to busy up clean lines. I hope you are right!

what about the front grill? 370Z had a very clean bumper design, front side markers integrated into headlights instead of being on fender like on our cars and rear markers are small, not sure how that would "ruin" the design..400Z concept already has badges front and back, even on trunk lid.

To be absolutely clear: I really like the concept and I am not saying that they are going to ruin it in production... I hope they do not.

But your picture is actually a pretty good example of what I am talking about. Does that front license plate mount look clean? Does it flow with the lines of the car, or was is just slapped on as an afterthought?

but all cars have license plates to deal with lol. what sports cars front ends are designed for a plate? pretty sure all car designers don't care, they all look like afterthoughts to me..so glad I live in AZ.. get what you're tryig to say but these are small gripes yo, nissan even says themselves it is 99% production ready and it certainly appears so as nothing about the concept is really radical..side markers, badges, front plate, all very minor details, just merely saying it wouldn't change the design like you're worried about..
