That is probably around .001% of the list!

Thinking this is my next project.

Also birdcage but won't need to quite as perfect as some.

I think it also needs some internal lighting, but I'm not that ambitious.

They provide a handy-dandy prying tool to get them apart and to set them which is nice.

Ok, that tool is really cool. Would have been great to have back in the day...

Pretty amazing you have a photo of the actual plane that appears on the box.

It was a very famous aircraft flown by an ace.
He crashed it landing in front of the press that were there since he (and the aircraft) was set to rotate back to the US for a bond tour. He wasn't hurt but it means there are a pile of pictures of the crashed plane.
Between the preflight press pictures and the crashed pictures it is probably one of the best documented aircraft in WW2. There are dozens.

How do you allow for colour correction? I note the nosecone is doing a "Hakone"...

Mostly I go by a "that looks close enough" approach. Sometimes there are clues that can be used to figure things out even in black and white picture.
I presume you mostly noticed the reds in the two pictures are radically different. In that case I would say that neither is accurate. These aircraft flew out of Briton and mostly used the RAF paints to customize since they didn't have much beyond their standard US basic camo paints. That means the nose cone, checkerboard and wheels were probably done in RAF insignia red from the roundels.
So this is the red I would go with:

The purists insist on using only military issued specific numbered colours for aircraft but I do not like that idea. Colours varied (there are at least 60 different shades of "olive drab") and unless you are doing a brand new piece of equipment from a know manufacturer in a given moment of time the numbered colours mean little. Add into that the fact that when you shrink something down the full size colour may look way off in scale. Dirt, wear and lightig also come into play and will change the official colour.

The aircraft that Ultra served in is a great example. The colour in the picture he sent me (yes there is a young Ultramaroon there) doesn't look anything like what I thought would be ore accurate in small scale. The aircraft was also obviously scrubbed really clean for the photoshoot and it need some darkening up and grunge since that is how it would be day to day.
He says I called it but may just have been being polite.

So all in all unless there is somebody that actually flew, drove or serviced equipment to tell me I am wrong I just paint it my best guess.

Your tax dollars hard at work. Anyone care to guess how many cans of this stuff we used in the absence of fresh water? It makes for a great instant detail spray.
