Slower steering ratio?

From the press release of the 2022 BRZ:

Combined with its quick 13.5:1 steering ratio, the 2022 BRZ gives drivers a smooth, direct feel for the road and a near-instantaneous response to it.

The 2020 BRZ has a 13.1:1 steering ratio. https://www.subaru.com/vehicles/brz/...p-differential

An ultra-quick 13.1:1 steering ratio provides instantaneous response to driver input and an outstanding feel for the road.

The lower the number, the quicker the steering. So the old car has a quicker steering ratio than the new car! Wonder why they would have slowed it down as the steering on the old car was close to perfect..

The press release never said it had a 13.5:1 steering ratio. The engine has a 13.5:1 compression ratio.

Edit, maybe your local subaru press release is different than ours. That would be really weird if they had the same compression ratio as steering ratio...

Outstanding Response and Road Feel
The chassis and body of the BRZ have been reengineered for lighter weight, an even lower center of gravity, 50% increased torsional rigidity, and 60% increased front lateral rigidity. Combined with its quick 13.5:1 steering ratio, the 2022 BRZ gives drivers a smooth, direct feel for the road and a near-instantaneous response to it.

i imagine they did it because people whined about the steering being too twitchy compared to their mom's 1990 hand-me-down camry.

Anyway, I wonder if the 1st gen rack will be compatible with the 2nd gen for a better ratio...

My wife's 17 Impreza had the 13.1 steering and it was indeed twitchy where I never felt that with the FRS. Thought maybe they went to a 13.5 on the 2020 Impreza and just parts binned the New BRZ from there. Looked it up and the new Impreza is actually now a 13.0:1. They went the other way! Odd.

It is sort of strange (not impossible still strange) that the steering ratio is listed the same as the compression ratio. Maybe one is wrong?

Probably not worth the swap since the difference will be minimal as far as feel goes.

Ratio isn’t everything either. Is there any info on wether maximum steering angle is the same?

Nothing of that sort of detail yet.

It’s not twitchy at all, it’s near perfection. And I don’t see Toyota/Subaru messing with that.

Even though when it came out it was the best electric steering I'd experienced to date - I assumed any twitchiness it did have came from that, not so much the ratio. That and wider tires that make it tramline a bit.

The ratio is different and surprisingly the marketing description is changed, they did something.

Lots of things they could change to keep a similar 'feel', for instance I can imagine a hacky solution to the eps overheating/shutting down is to reduce caster to reduce the load on the electric motor which would make the car even twitchier so reduce the steering ratio to compensate. It'll lose a bit of self centering action which could make the car less driftable and caster helps in cornering keeping the tire flatter to counteract body roll so even less front grip then the old car which
