02-151-14R tsb scion frs

Has anybody with an FRS had this performed? It comes up as a Subaru TSB, nothing from scion that I can find. It applies to 13my BRZs, and calls for the replacement of the valves, camshafts, and rocker arms (among other things) in the B2 head.

I took my stethoscope to the B2 head to listen for what I thought was the “sewing machine sound when warm”, but all I could hear was the fuel pump.

I run 0-20 M1 with hy-per lube additive, and KN filters.

The car runs excellent, no CEL, and it’s generally quiet (as quiet as they come. It is a Subaru after all).

J02 recall was performed in December 2019, and it’s been 11k miles since then. I don’t think there’s any dirt there.

The TSB is to address a tapping sound...so if your car is running excellent and is quiet. It's not needed.

Well that’s the thing..... it’s quiet, but the sound is off. You can hear that the B2 valvetrain is louder. With my clapped out stethoscope, it’s hard to pinpoint the location of the sound because the hpfp is so loud.

I’m just trying to figure out if I can go to a Toyota dealership and have the work performed, in the event that it needs it. Otherwise I’m going to start looking into a spare motor so I can have a seamless transition when this one blows up. Lol

It's a Subaru TSB only, and the noise it addresses can be heard with the naked ear, no stethoscope needed.

Subaru only........ of course it is....... How dare I question Toyota’s QC.

Anyway.........

That seems to be the theme. I talked with one of my buddies about it, and he said it could be mistaken for a worn vacuum pump, which is pretty effn loud. So I guess Subaru’s normal valvetrain noise has officially been passed down through at least 5 generations. My recently purchased 16 2.0i does it, my frs does it, my 00 2.2 does it, and my ea82t does it. Guess I’ll just turn up the radio. Lol

I’m afraid I can’t do that.

REALLY, OP. If you need a stethoscope to hear this engine make noises, I suggest you have your ears tested -

Oof. That hurts. Lol being a machinist, owning lots of straight piped cars, and going to brutal death metal concerts could have taken its toll I guess.

It’s vicious. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that worrying about impending doom means I suffer twice in the long run.

Being a mechanic ruined me. Lol
