This is what I did for my rebuild. $230 worth of fasteners was far better than "shit, where'd that solo cup full of LF bolts go.."

You mean you don't replace all your stock hardware with zinc-plated ones?

Back in the late fifties a family friend replaced his 1953 Studebaker Commander DD with another one he had found. He then took his original car and stripped it down for a complete nut and bolt restoration. Mind you the car was only about eight years old. Anyway, he fixed all the rusted areas with new metal and then painted everything with several coats of zinc yellow primer before giving it it's final colour coats. Any hardware that was getting painted was zinc coated. Hardware that was not getting painted or that was exposed to the elements was switched for stainless steel. He was an engineer, what can I tell you.
When the car was finished he put it in long term storage in the back of his biggest shed. It was a decade or more before it came out.

Waiting for shims to finish the engine, valve lash is out, not by a ton but by enough that most need a size or two up to hit nominal spec, 3-4 are actually out of spec. Crank bearing #3 had some light damage so the rod was the big one, block should be good to be put back together and kept as a spare, might need a new crank though.

As a note, d4-s does not eliminate buildup on the intake valves, a few were pretty grimy after 117k miles, cleaned up the buildup on the combustion chamber as well. Some flashing on the intake tells me a diy port job would yield gains, but not worth the effort for the average Joe (or those competing where the rules prohibit it). Also lapped the valves because there was some pitting and the service manual recommended it.

Even pure port injected engines and carbureted engines have about as much buildup as what you have on your valves. That's really not bad.

You’re right, guess I’m just surprised how necessary a good old fashioned tune up still is. Never really had a car get to this age and for me to consider it worth doing.

That's really neat. I like the "exposed simple knob" look, but I also can't get out of 80s and 90s car interiors

First snow day with the car. Didn't have space to store the car or get another, so she's on daily duty for this winter. In ~4" of Calgary slush the car did great with the 215 Kumho Wi31's, no complaints or loss of traction that wasn't self inflicted

Make the habit to "flush" the car underside after driving it
