I mean, I think car forumgoers all like to believe they're a bunch of shrewd negotiators, so while everyone might be clamoring to say how amazing of a deal they got no one wants to admit they paid *gasp* over sticker.

Yeah I think the difference is between trying to get one off of the lot asap vs factory ordering and waiting. Markups look like they're a lot more common if you dont factory order.

There's a couple of '22 BRZs at a local dealer that are advertised at MSRP on the various car shopping sites. I emailed them about one, to get their personal "best price" and it was $5K more than advertised.

Paying over MSRP for a car like this seems silly to me.

$7k over in California (as one poster mentioned)? Fly-and-drive to the middle of the country and save yourself $5k. And it probably wouldn't even cost $2k for a one-way ticket and the drive back.

The same thing happened with the Supra when it came out. People were paying these HUGE markups and with in 7-8 months you could find them all over the country for 3-6k under MSRP. I guess if overpaying by nearly 5 figures so you can say "FIRST!" makes someone feel better, more power to them.

I realize the market conditions right now are different, but if you don't HAVE to buy a car, I don't see the point in paying the inflated prices because of a "want."

$4300 under the MRSP of the base car or the inflated price by the dealer with all the accessories? $4300 under is hard to believe, unless you are wife of the dealership owner. I mean just rough numbers , let's say the MRSP of the base car was $28000. The dealer would be happy to make 4% on the car which is $1120. Assume the dealer gets a double holdback from the factory of 4%, another $1120. Then the dealer waives a $400 doc fee. So $4300 -1120-1120-400 = $1660 loss to the dealer, common man.

Maybe $200 or so. I don't really remember. It wasn't anything crazy. They also gave me a nice chunk back on my lease trade in which was a year early. That surprised me the most.
