Turn off the Nannies? - What could happen?

Put an inexperienced driver in a car that is more than he can handle?
Leave the VSC ON!

I don't get why anyone turns the nannies off on public roads. It is just stupid and asking for problems. The point of them is to help when something stupid happens, and they cannot do that if they are off.

The nannies aren't truly off unless you do the pedal dance, from what I understand.

I turn off VSC and traction control every single time I get in the car (I drive it only in the warmer months) I don't like how aggressive they are when they intervene and they intervene prematurely IMHO.

I'm older and I don't assume RWD is an automatic death sentence. Quite the opposite, actually.

The "I'm older" bit may be an important consideration.

My FR-S is the first car that I owned that had any kind of traction or stability control (my previous model miata had no nannies).

I never turn them off (no, I don't track the car) and I've only had them kick in twice.

However, many new drivers never drove a car without some sort of ESC ..... so, when they turn them off (or tone them down) especially on a a rear wheel drive car .... and the car goes "sideways" ...... they don't know what to do.......

So, for the new drivers ..... I would recommend NEVER turning them off.

Now, for you old fools, that cut your teeth on a 9/16th inch wrench, drove on biased ply tires, with drum brakes, lousy shocks, rear wheel drive, front heavy, cars, without power steering or power brakes and on gravel roads ....... just carry on .....

Cars with electronic nanny systems are set up with stock tyres!
So how can they possibly work with skinny "space saver" spare tyres?
The space saver is only rated at 80kph and in a 110kph zone it is a recipe for disaster!

I agree with the bolded part. Every car/truck I've owned for the last 30 years has been RWD up until about 5 years ago. Funny thing is, I'm far more cautious with FWD cars because I'M not used to them.

I feel I have better control with RWD. Probably just due to being familiar with it. I know what to expect.

Interesting short blog;

You also described most of my older vehicles.

Here in America spare tires are rated for 55 mph. But that's seriously underrated. Car and Driver put a saver spare through all their tests years ago and the tire is surprisingly durable. I wouldn't think twice about going 120 kph on a saver spare.

...sarcasm, right?

Call it macabre, morbid, psychopathic or plain shitty of me but I like stories like these when no one gets hurt and its only material damage, something about a 911 turbo trying to kill you for the laughs when you run out of talent seems... right.

Technically they're still not off with the pedal dance as the anti-lock brake system is still active. I think they're all off if you pull the ABS fuse.

But I agree with others, there's no real reason to turn them off on public roads, if you're going fast enough to spin the tires you're going fast enough to get in trouble, whether it's a slap on the wrist or an accident. I have zero trust in motorists around me and I'm not psychic so I don't know what's around the next bend.

There's safe places to slip and slide out there, so I limit myself to doing it there.

Not terribly relevant to the thread, but fun and worth noting that video came out 3 months before the 86 did...

I can spin my tires on low speed corners where I'm gentle with the clutch. MPSS is great for warm dry roads, but it sucks ass on warm dry dusty roads. The nannies have saved me a few times. You just don't expect the rear end to come around when you're going <20 mph.
