Not sure when jbl was ever not a top tier company, sure they make cheap entry level stuff but their high end lines have always been good. Even the cheap jbl gto subs are well ahead of most other entry level stuff. Their MS components are very positively reviewed and the EZ amps are simple to install and make good power.

I went and bought an EVO 3D on ebay for 100$ in excellent condition. It works pretty well and I can just toss it in the glove box. I have a 160GB iPod that has my entire music collection so BT streaming isn't necessary (nor would I want to sacrifice the audio quality by running BT). I was interested in the MK808, but went the EVO route because it has it's own screen in case I can't get it connected to the unit.

That's not a bad option and I saw you mention it in your build thread. My question would be how teathering works from phone to phone. Also, I believe you answered this, but the EVO is using the Pioneers GPS antenna, correct?

I like the new interface Dezoris is using prototyping. It's pretty slick and polished. Plus, by using an Android based device I can always swap out to another interface if I don't care for it.

My major concern with using something like a MK808 w/ a stand alone monitor is audio quality. I'm somewhat an audiophile and would like the best possible sound I can get from my system. I'm pretty new to the Android platform but I'm fairly certain it won't support an external DAC.

Well, the audio is over HDMI, so the quality will be dependent on the head unit, not the MK808. Yes the EVO uses the Pioneer GPS.

Using a stand alone monitor like the Xenarc, not pairing it with a head unit.

If the MK808 supported an external audio processor like maybe a Creative Labs X-Fi HD I could pipe the audio to a processor like the 3sixy.3 but that's just adding layers of complication

My budget is 4k so the components will vary a bit, but this is what I got and could be a good reference point:

Headunit: Pioneer AVH-x5500bhs (around $400)
Front stage: Audible Physics XR3M 3" Wideband (in place of tweeters) and 6.5" Midbass (around $1000)
DSP: Mosconi 6 to 8 DSP (around $800)
Subwoofer: Arc audio ARC8 (around $125)
Amplifiers: Arc Audio XDi 803 and 804 (around $800 for both)

The rest goes to labor, building a custom amp rack, fiberglass side sub box, sound deadening, etc.

Good luck.

The Arc Audio KAR series was on my short list, but you prefer the XDi's? What's the major difference? They're both Class D amps as far as I can tell.

I've heard of Mosconi but never experienced them in person. I'm wondering if thats not a West Coast thing like Nakamichi was back in the day.

great question regarding the XDi's =)

Part of the build of my goal is to maintain the trunk space, maintain the spare tire, and also make sure my rear seats are still foldable. Therefore, I needed amps that have a small footprint and the XDi's are perfect. When the system is done, I will share some pictures, but basically these two amps and the DSP are installed on a custom amp rack, replacing the skinny but long piece of styrofoam that sits between the rear seats and spare wheel. the KAR series are sweet if space is not a concern.

I think Mosconi recently entered the market, and they do have a wide range of products. My friend @DekaMori has the AS series and it sounds awesome.

When it comes to DSP, I think Audison is great =)

XDi's are great small footprint amps as are the JL Audio XD's and HD's, Rockford Fosgate BRT (6.5"x4.25" ), PPI Phantom, Soundstream Nano, Alpine PDX and X Power. Some of the new Zapco's are pretty small too but the first list is a good place to start for power.

bit10d or 3sixty.3
HSK165XL or HSK165XL
HDP5 or P1000X5
HX250D or T1D210

I would say one of these setups, but keep in mind building a box. If you build it about 150 for mats, if you have it built then 350-550.

Ill pm you on a 3rd option.
