Adding Steering Wheel Controls to my 2013

This is great! I got the same controls and just double taped them to the steering wheel. Works but nothing as clean as this. Makes me want to get a 3D printer

The AliExpress SWC buttons work using a resistance ladder. Each button correlates to a particular resistance between Key1/Key2 and ground.

An Arduino was utilized to read the resistance by using a voltage divider circuit. To do the prototyping, I used an Arduino Uno.


My Kenwood head unit reads SWC commands in a NEC IR format. Luckly, there a bit of information on how this works and some existing coding on the internet. I spent about a week troubleshooting the voltage divider and NEC IR code. Also added more functions by utilizing a "press and hold" feature to each button. Once that was done, I moved everything onto a smaller Arduino nano.



Obviously have to use the 3D printer whenever I can.


Here is the completed project. It is all working great and it feels super rewarding to do something novel like this.

This is actually a brilliant idea with it not looking too out of place. I know some people took the wireless controller like you found but just taped it onto their steering wheel and it looked very tacky. Some people did figure out how to retrofit a 2016+ steering wheel with controls onto a 2013 model but it required a lot more work. You should write this up in the DIY section.
