I loved the E36. I drove two in the past. 318is and 330CI. I loved them both. In fact when I get outta the military I will get another one for nostalgia.
My dad is selling his 1999 e36 M3 brand new convertible top, 60,000 miles, bigger injectors, custom tune, aftermarket exhaust, CAI, garage kept, aftermarket wheels, Hella halo headlights, aftermarket head unit, professionally detailed every 3-6 months etc

Having owned a used BMW I will warn you that buying a used BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc will also cost a pretty penny when you need to start fixing stuff. Hell, even a VW costs a lot more than most cars to get worked on typically. So keep that in mind when talking used vs new. I am running Blizzak W-70's on my BRZ and cannot get stuck even if I try in the snow. So I would not worry about a lighweight sports coupe and snow as long as you buy a good set of dedicated snow tires.

If you want a luxury car, the FR-S/BRZ is not for you really. While the BRZ has some nice features (dual zone climate control, Xenon headlights, push button keyless start, touchscreen NAV with bluetooth, heated seats, leather seats with Alcantara inserts, etc) it is not screaming luxury car on the inside.

Like others said, you really need to decide what you want first and if you do go used luxury car, I would get one that is certified and has a good warranty. Otherwise be prepared to spend thousands a year keeping the car on the road.

Once the snow really accumulates your low-riding RWD coupe will get stuck, even studded tires cannot help you overcome the loss of momentum from snow plowing. The same goes for the low bmw too. And snow tires are fine for snow, if it gets icey only studs or chains will help.

Chains and studs are illegal here and yes ice is ice. Best thing to do is to drive alertly and use proper precautions. I drove through a good 10-12" the other day with no issues. Our roads here get plowed pretty quickly and it is pretty rare to drive in more than 8-10" so I should be good.

Good snow tires (studless) are perfectly fine on ice too, so long as you drive carefully, and they grip far better on ice than any all seasons.
