Is it really any fun if it's less than 4K

Damn, that's a long commute!

Having had two different first Gen’s no fn way. For me this is a huge upgrade in every way. Every way. I knew that on the drive home from the dealer.

Is it a 20k upgrade over Gen1. Because that’s what it would cost me to get one.

The only way to answer that is to be you. $20k means different things to different people. Cars hold different values to different people.

Two people who both make $50k/yr could feel completely differently about paying $30k for a new car - one feels it's money well-spent and the other thinks it's a waste to spend over half their yearly gross on a new car when a used car half the price will still get them A to B.

Someone who makes $200k a year might not even need to budget for spending $20k.

And the difference between the two Gens is more significant to some than to others.

It's just not a question anyone can answer for anyone but themselves.

This whole thread is subjective. Just wondering what he thought. Because I don’t think it’s worth 20k. If I did not have one and wanted a twin as a daily, I would get the Gen 2.

my first gen cost me $40k. so the 2nd gen by comparison is somewhat of a deal.

That's my whole point though. For some people it's worth spending $20k for a relatively small improvement in performance. For other people it is not.

Unless you know someone well enough to know their opinions generally fall in line with yours you're only asking a question that doesn't yield useful results. Like "is black licorice delicious?" Obviously no it's not, but if you know the person answering likes all the same foods you do then there's a chance that if they say "yes" that you'll like it too. (weirdos)

Otherwise it's just useless data with no point of reference to give it perspective.

The rest of the thread is more of a "and here's why I do/don't think there's a reason to stick with 1st Gen". The $20,000 question is more of a reason than a question.

Wait..what....?...you can downshift for torque? What you can downshift TWO TIMES?????

As someone who now owns a first and second gen. (Second gen was purchased first, and the first gen is a replacement for an NA Miata) I can without a doubt say that the second gen is worth it. When you're referring to $20k, you're comparing a beat, probably salvage title, to a new one. It's more of a $10-15k question for a decent one, and even less if you're talking a latter first gen.

The second gen has kept the underlying characteristic of the first gen, and rounded off the rough edges that IMO, always ruled them out from being a daily driver. You add in the improvement in power, and it now feels like the chassis isn't let down by a lack of power.

I'm lucky enough to be able to afford the difference without hurting my finances too much. For someone with less disposable income, that difference may not be worth it to them, but I'm comfortable in saying that for those who can swing the extra money, it's money well spent.

Now, for a track car, I think I'd stick with a first gen. The development cycle is mature, and it's a proven reliable track car. At least as much as anything else really is. IMO power doesn't make track days more fun, just drops your lap times. A good track car is cheap(ish), reliable, cheap to maintain/fix, and safe for if something does happen, and the first gen ticks those boxes.
