"IMAGE" is different for different people. People that think negatively of a fantastic car like the Miata for whatever reasons (possibly they project fears of their own inadequacies onto it?) have problems... There is no good reason to let their idiotic "image" of the car affect your ability to enjoy it.

In the words of Dr, Seuss: "...those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

The people who matter do not project a negative image onto the Miata.

This is why I say it is a GREAT car, just not the best image.
You can make an argument that someone who wouldn't drive one because of the image isn't an enthusiast, but you can't say acknowledging that image exists makes a person not an enthusiast. Really though, I would say it just makes a person not a purist or not fanatical. I have raced cars for 20 years and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have happened if I wasn't enthusiastic about it, but there are some things beyond driving enthusiasm that impact my automotive purchase decisions including image - i'm human.

OP if you like the Miata, get the Miata. The only reliability issues I've heard of are the fragile manual transmissions, but it sounds like you want the automatic so no issues there.

I agree the FR-S looks better, but it's not like the Miata is ugly either. If you get an RF and lower it a bit to get rid of the goofy wheel gap, I think you're set.

370Z - They haven't updated them much over the years but again a very capable car if you can get over those ugly ass door handles.

A last gen Mustang or Camaro in any of the engine configurations. The most recent versions (especially the 4 and 6s)are starting to be closer to sports cars than muscle cars. Down side is of course they are everywhere you look.
Considering the base cars are now the same MSRP here as a new 86 that's a pretty damn good deal. I considered it until I started spec'ing and realized to get the LSD the price goes up significantly.
Still though, it's a good option and if you look to the used market there is a deal to be had on a well equipped example.

If you are looking new on a MX5, I'd go for the 19 over the 18. The minor changes they made would be worth it to me. The RF would be ideal but they're around 44K CAD tax in MSRP. +5K if you want the sport package with brembos. 50K for a MX5 sounds absurd.

I agree. I drove our Miata for 80 some thousand miles over a eight year period and no one made fun of me -

I track with my brother who runs an MX5 NC and he's done coilovers and 235 sticky tires and a couple other minor mods and it's a world away from stock. Awesome car. It doesn't take much to get rid of the shortcomings. I still like my FRS however a miata with a couple of goodies rocks.

Miatas are better sports cars than frz86s
Frz86s are more useful to live with

You can always tell the guys worried about image. They are the ones that put up a pull on the forum asking what wheels(or color wheels) they should buy for their car.

Just to add that brembo package includes TWO brembo front brakes, not 4. At least the twin packages with brembos don't cheap out and at least give you 4.

Meh. Many of us are just joking. The Miata is one of the leaders as far as becoming a living meme goes. The "image" comes about for a reason though.
Same as the Mustangs does not come equipped with crowd control sensors to thin out the herd of bystanders. They are an option.

Or just straight up ask as a first time poster, "What mods should I do to MY car?".

¿What influence has the MX-5 had on the 86?
