Are you new to cars? Please tell me your not an "engineer".
I'm in my last semester as an engineering undergrad. Except my discipline is for aircraft and spacecraft instead of these voodoo fire machines we have.

Gonna be real honest here guys. I like how CAIs look in the engine bay and I like the noise and I'm aware that the most HP I'm gonna get is +2 or +3HP. Except I'll probably go Grimmspeed instead if it can clear my oil cooler.

Ryan GT86: btw, stock intake also is CAI. But if you must buy aftermarket intake, then good choice on Grimmspeed's, as it is one of few, that doesn't mess with much with MAF sensor readings to artificially lean AF, and also doesn't require removal of bumper for filter change .

I'm looking at the pics of the Grimmspeed and it looks like it'll be too tight. I'll probably go with the Perrin CAI and a quick release bumper kit.

If using Perrin's, then i guess MAF sensor will need recalibration in ECU tune. In your place i'd keep using stock intake/airbox, and install aftermarket drop-in airfilter. Most of gains, for minimal cost, less to loose when reverting to stock prior sale.

The version I'm planning on is the CARB certified CAI that doesn't need a tune. The version that needs a tune is discontinued according to FT86SF.

The ECU compensates well enough... But the result is power loss.

As cjd wrote. One thing is CARB certification, which is about emissions and maybe legality in some states, another - about actual gains (and in some cases - safety). For later, aftermarket part should behave similar to stock in areas other parts depend on, or have differences taken into account in other parts (i.e. - in ecu tune). Which often negates "gains".

In many cases "gains" with aftermarket intakes by large portion were artificial in way of fooling MAF sensor readings, resulting in engine running leaner when regulated by stock ecu tune from those readings. Leaner, thus with more power, but more prone to knock, especially with worse fuel. Hence better consider using intakes, that don't sink to such means for artificial gains, and whose MAF readings won't differ much from stock intake. Usually i seen mentioned as such two of them - TRD's & Grimmspeed's. My own choice would be drop-in airfilter, but if going for full intake, i'd choose from those two.

I don't think the CAI is in too low of a location for water damage.

Those telling him not to get a CAI probably haven't been in a tuned 86 with a Perrin CAI. They sound great.

The biggest issue IMO is if you are in a low speed fender-bender. A one-peice intake will probably smash up into your throttle body.
No danger of this, there's a squishy intake elbow between the Perrin CAI and throttle body.

I recently installed a Perrin CAI simply because it sounds rad!! gives higer rpm range a throaty sound.
