should you use a carbon cleaner when changing the oil

hey guys

my mechanic said i should do a carbon cleaner on my 2013 86 when we do the oil change.

ive only had the car for 8 months so i don't know if the previous owner has done this.

i generally use caltex 98 octane, which claims to have engine cleaners in the fuel.

i have seen people say you shouldn't use carbon cleaners, that they can damage the engine.

what are your thoughts on using a carbon cleaner on the 86 engine?

thanks, rob.

I don't think it would be necessary.

The engines use a direct and port injection system. This keeps the valves pretty much carbon free.
Using it won't hurt anything but won't do any good either.
I would not bother.

i don't bother with intake cleaning methods unless i've got oddball vibration/running issues, and have already exhausted the typical replacement parts (plugs/wires, injectors, belts, coil packs)

After you make about 10 posts, a "thanks" button will appear at the bottom of peoples posts.

it starts at 10 because we don't want people to be too thankful right off the bat!

That's true.

Why? Because those first 10 "want to thanks" are the most sincere. After that, people just want to argue about your answer.
