Selling a modified car
I have a 2013 FR-S with 25k miles on it. My son and I worked on it as a project and we've since moved on to other things. I'm curious as to whether I should try to sell it as it sits or go through the pain and agony of unwinding the bolt ons it has.
Mods that I can think of: Factory Brembos all around 18" TWS lightweight forged wheels (not TSW, the Japanese forged ones) adjustable hotchkis sways with STB Racecomp Engineering Coilovers Catted UEL Header and TRD exhaust TRD Airbox OEM Plus speaker upgrade Alpine Head Unit OLM lights all around Clean Carfax Where I'm stuck is that so few of these cars are unmodified, so I'm not sure if they actually sell better (ie more) with mods or without? Do I put it all back to factory and sell the parts? Nashville isn't exactly a hotbed for japanese imports, so it would all have to be shipped. Any thoughts? |

The price for the parts on the car vs return it all to stock are about the same sad to say.
Also how low is it. Pancaked on coils is stupid and screams the car was abused even if it wasn't. IMO with such low miles for that year I'd return it to stock (especially since you don't even have a tune) and sell it to a private buyer. That includes those wheels. Maybe leave the TRD stuff, the OEM+ audio on the car. |

As long as it hasn't been tuned to a fever pitch or force injected the engine should be relatively reliable.
The handling package seems to be a plus. If it was raced, the track org. may have some sort of grapevine or info exchange for people looking out. If not, it may be a fairly good buy. That is if most of the miles haven't been on tracks.

How much do you value your time?
I think if you took the parts off and sold them separately, you'd stand to make about $5k on the parts alone. Less if you are considering eating the shipping & PayPal/eBay fees and if you need to buy stock parts to replace everything that comes off the car. I don't think most will pay more than $2k on top of the "market" stock price for the car with mods pre-installed. Last edited by EndlessAzure; 12-12-2023 at 02:38 AM. |

A car with mods can be worth a bit more to one person and nothing to the next. It’s really going to depend on the buyer. I’d try selling as is and if you are not getting serious buyers or inquiries then maybe consider putting to stock.

I was thinking I will wait til late Jan/Feb for tax return season before selling. I have a little time to figure out if I'm going to strip it. I definitely didn't scrimp when I did it, but hey mods are always throw away at some level.
