Yea a beater seems sensible, I'm just kind of terrified of potentially having to fix it lol. Buy a $2500 car...spend another 2000 on fixing it, that would really hurt. I should have gotten something like an AWD Toyota Venza or Acura RL last year instead of my G35, but oh well...now that I only need 2 more months of car usage, I don't really want to tie up that much capital on a car that just sits around.
Another complication is that I might just leave the car unused for 3 months (gonna use my crappy Reno place as my "ski cabin" in the winter) and I'm kind of worried that I come back to a non-running car. Some cars get fussy about sitting unused. Any issues with circa 2001 EJ25 Subarus, or are they actually dependable despite the used-BMW-like market prices? I have a hard time believing a car with a rebuilt engine could be sold for under 4000 bucks if there isn't anything that often goes horribly wrong. I see a M/T Outback for 2500 with supposedly a refreshed engine, new clutch, and just some broken window regulators. I could up the budget for a newer FB25 Subaru but it seems like a waste if I don't really use it. |

Head gaskets after a hundred thou. My mom's lasted until 180-ish. I've only had to adjust the valves since inheriting it. Dealer did a meh job adjusting lash when replacing HG. Wasn't awful, just noisy.

Okay, so a replaced head gasket should probably be okay? What about the transmission/differentials?

Eyes wide shut. I refuse to make any more weapons and do my best to reduce reuse recycle.
Not kidding. I live with that awareness every... single... day.

I miss my 2000 outback sport. Best sub $4000 car I ever owned, including my Miata behind it.

Well you would at least need to go as far as knapping flint or you would starve.
