2nd gen GR86/BRZ struts on 1st gen?

As the title suggests, I am inquiring on if it is possible to upgrade the first gen suspension with 2nd gen struts/dampers? I hear that the 2nd gen rides a lot smoother than the first gen. I currently have a 2013 FRS.

If you're swapping in complete 2nd gen assemblies (dampers + springs + top mounts) then everything goes in nice and easy. The 2nd gen parts do ride better than a 2013 for sure. I would recommend swapping in the complete assemblies to make install easier (no spring compressor needed) and also because your 11 year old rubber top mounts are likely worn by now anyway.

The rear shock is slightly different on the 2nd gen, so you can't easily use 1st gen springs on 2nd gen rear shocks.

Andrew,

Do you know if the 2nd gen assemblies have a smaller diameter than the 1st gen assemblies? Mainly curious to see if there is additional strut to wheel clearance by going with the 2nd gen set up vs something like a PP Sach damper for those that don't want to go to a coilover just to fit a wider wheel and tire combo.

They look to be about the same.
