Coolant type
What coolant does the fr-s take ?
In the manual it says the Toyota 50/50 super long life coolant. Subaru has a similar one (not sure if it’s the same) The reason why I’m asking is because, I went to a Toyota dealership and asked for fr-s coolant and they gave me a a Scion 55/45 mix. I asked em for the 50/50 mix and they said that the car doesn’t use that mix and that they don’t have it... anyone else experience this? I’m thinking maybe I should go to Subaru for the coolant. Not sure if it’s the same one for the fr-s. I looked at the colour of the one I have in my car and it’s blue. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sucks that your local dealer parts department is run by idiots.
Toyota 50/50 ready mix is what it needs. No idea why they don't have that in stock. I would either: Buy online, Go to the Subaru dealer, Or go back to that dealership tell them to suck your **** and give you the 50/50 mix. (Coolant) not what you think.....

I work for a Honda dealer and we carry 50/50 blue coolant. Think it's the same stuff?

This is what I put in my car:
https://www.valvoline.com/our-produc...freeze-coolant It's easy to pick up and half the cost of Subaru Super Coolant. A lot of places don't sell the blue version but both colors are identical. I found someone did a bunch of research and found out this is basically identical (same manufacturer and specs) to the Subaru Super Coolant. I will try to dig up the thread talking about it and link back here. I don't think it was on this forum though. |

50/50 or 55/45 is damn near the same thing. Buy it 100% and mix it your self if it's a big deal.

For cry-en out loud, folks -
This damn stuff last 10 years and exactly how much a year are you going to use? Now, I'm not against trying to save a little money, nor do I disagree that the basic formula for the "real" and the "other" stuff could be the same. So, unless you work in the formulation plant where these coolants are formulated, OR you have access to a GC, HPLC or a mass spec, you don't know what proprietary ingredients may have been added to the formulations. So, my recommendation is just buy and use the stuff that is recommended by the manufacturer of the vehicle. It was somewhat different back in the day, before permanent anti-freeze was "invented". In the fall, in the colder climates, one would drain the radiator and refill it with a combination of rainwater and alcohol. Now, the alcohol we used (to save money) came not from the hardware store but from my uncle. He always had a supply that didn't quite to come up to spec from his still. (side note - NO - we seldom got them mixed up - your gut would tell you) Where was I - @Tcoat , have I told this story/given this lecture, before? humfrz |
