What is the ACTUAL amount of oil the FRS/BRZ needs?
So it has already been proven again and again that the manual recommended 5.8 quarts is a serious overfill. So being conservative, I added only 5.3 quarts and it's STILL an overfill according to my dip stick. WTF. So does anyone actually know the right amount of oil to put in the car?

Did you measure the oil level after it's been running for a while?

Are you sure your car is parked on level ground? I know if I park head-in it reads below the full dot, and if I park head-out it reads above the dot.

5.8 quarts is with the filter if it's dead empty. Are you sure you're draining the majority of the oil? Are you sure your car is perfectly even when measuring your oil? Are you measuring it 5 minutes after turning the car off from full operating temp?
I usually add 5 quarts, drive, check it, it's a little low most of the time. Add a little and it's perfectly at the top fill line on the dipstick. |

I'm usually around 5 qts. give or take, not too fussed about the exact quantity. I've put 4.8 in and I don't think I've ever gone over 5.5 qts.
I consider the bottom line plus a little extra to be good. I don't fill to the top line, or in this car the 'top hole'. |

I measured it while it was dead cold. Honestly, the ground the car on seems flat but other users have pointed out even a slight incline/decline will mess up the readings. To the naked eye, the ground seems flat but I will re-check the dip-stick at a different location tomorrow. I am pretty confident I drained most of the oil in the car.

@lupindub Drive to a gas station, I think they're mostly flat near the pumps. Take a level and check if you want. Your car will be hot at least and you'll be pretty damn close to level at least.

For this oil change, my first since buying the car, I used Mobil 1. My mechanic likes Royal Purple, but I think I will probably go the Amsoil route next time. I wish I had the time and a flat place to work on my car to do it myself. Just fortunate to have a local guy I trust who charges very reasonably to work on all my family's cars. Paid him $15 to change my oil and filter when I brought him the materials. Last edited by wireman957; 09-12-2015 at 12:35 PM. |
