Don't know where you live but I also bought my 86 when I was around 18/19. In Australia, insurance for me costs around $1500 AUD (which is actually really low compared to the average which is more around the $1800-2000 mark)

Reliability as far as I've heard/experienced is the same as any other toyota (even though it's a subaru engine). Aside from the 2013 recalls just make sure to keep up with your maintenance and you should be good!

dont ask here for insurance quotes, just get quotes directly from the insurer since it depends on your history, location etc.

Reliability is good, save for throwout bearing issues before 2017. You can easily google this site itself and find all the issues people have.

Welcome to ..... The Forum ...

^ yep, liked the man up above said, call an insurance company and get quotes depending on your situation. That would be FREE and accurate.

As far as reliability, I've had my 2013 since it was new and it hasn't been back to the dealer except for the first three oil changes.

Depending on which year you buy you can get them super cheap. '13-14 look for ones that have done the recall, or not depends on who you ask.
I would go with the BRZ since it's worth it.

As for reliability, it's pretty easy to work on. Only major issues are typical clutches, and coil packs. Besides that pretty good unless you do engine mods. Then that goes downhill quick.

As for insurance, bend over and ask for lots of lube. Cause you are 18 in California and want a sports car. Those are big $$$ to insurance companies.

As others have stated, get a quote from a few insurance agencies. It might be cheaper if you go through your parents if you're 17.

As for reliability, there's an insane amount of info on here. Just uh... avoid the recall/issues/warrant subthread as it might scare if you if you don't know what to look for. Otherwise, this platform has been reliable for me the past 5 1/2 years!

I think your right. I think you and I are outside the normal demographics of drivers yet we pay the price as well. I just think about the difference in value between the two cars,,it's hard to fathom they'd be that close in insurance rates.

Depends how you define value;
I've never driven an 86 that performs like a Vette.
I've never driven a Vette that's as fun as an 86.

I pay $500 a year (went up $14 a year for the new one) but there are not nearly as many here to get crashed.
