That link with those articles are excellent. I'm going bbk eventually. No point wasting money on pads or discs and then realising I should have upgraded anyway.
Apex sprint kit is what I'm looking at. |

Wow, I see that after having started this thread a while ago, I've never been back here to give an update of what I did...
I dealt with Powerbrake SA and I found them very helpful and efficient. I followed their recommendations for a supercharged 86 for street and light track use. Front brakes :- Slotted Powerbrake rotors (stock size) Endless MX72 crossover street/track pads Endless RF-650 brake fluid Rear brakes remain stock Fitted by Steve's Auto Clinic Nelspruit Total cost was under R6k Since my brakes upgrade, I've done about 5000kms and one mild track day. I'll be putting in some serious track time on 13 April (13th) and they'll get a good hammering then. So far, I'm impressed - they work very well and I've detected no fade whatsoever. The only small downside is low bite when totally cold, so higher pedal pressure is required then. However, the lightest use gets enough heat into them to work fine, and once they're hot, they're really amazing!! Having experienced the nightmare of dramatic and extreme brake fade on track with stock brakes, I can't place enough value on having the peace of mind that your brakes will work the next time you push the pedal... Money well spent - I'm a happy camper!!

Anyone changed their brakes recently?
Any advice or recommendations to get this done in Gauteng? ( I have the Standard Spec - Small brakes at the back, really not comfortable with the reliability of these at the moment). I emailed Powerbrakes and got this reponse back: Im taking my HachiRoku in for a service in the next month, so want to do change the pads (atleast) and probably brake fluid. Not recently but I've got the PB slotted front disks with PB GTX pads on my High spec.

Hey, I know RMS Innovation has a number of kits choose from.
I don't know the details but if you want their contact details I can PM you. They know their stuff so depending on what you want (if you want to do a lot of tracking for e.g) they can advise you. |

Go with Powerbrake, they're top class.
Follow their recommendations, and don't bother with rear brakes - that's really not necessary, and don't worry about stock rear brake reliability - they're fine. However, what I don't see mentioned above is upgrading brake fluid which is critical, and IMO is much more important even than front rotors and pads. So, coming from someone with a std spec S/C car who puts in a track day per month and really hammers his brakes hard, in order of importance: - Better brake fluid - follow Powerbrake's recommendations. I use RF650, but that's overkill for an N/A car. - Front rotors - stay with stock size if you want to still fit 16" rims. - Front pads - don't go overkill. Track pads are a nightmare on the road. I suggest that you talk to @JouMaSeHoes - he's done a Powerbrake upgrade on an N/A std spec car.

I don't know Powerbrakes but looks reasonable.
Maybe also consider EBC at Formula Friction ......http://www.formulafriction.co.za/ Going fast is nice ...not being able to slow down is really bad. Even on a NA setup, consider changing your fluid to a full race spec fluid. Repeated heavy stops will boil your std fluid and result in no or little braking. It should recover but that fluid will be toast. Old school was grooved and cross drilled discs. Be very careful on grooving a disc with std pads. Braking could be reduced due to reduced contact area. New pads are no longer asbestos so the gassing that grooving and cross drilling helped with is no longer the major concern. Match pads and discs if going down the grooved route. On what pad to use ...tried them all and and always came back to EBC. Flying in a set of Yellow pads for front on 86. Yellow is fast road and medium track duty .... close to standard braking when cold and really brakes when warmed up. Red EBC is full track/racing and when cold, I have found them to squeal like a tame pig. This normally dissipates when warmed up but also found, using extensively on streets, tend to glaze and squeal a lot more. A few hard stops from 100km/h to zero would de-glaze but a PITA. Will also change fluid to full racing ...running standard discs in front. Spoke to Steve at RGM and their SC 86 is running Yellow pads on front with std discs. Rear is standard and after being hammered for 30 000km ...still doing well. Oh, and racing brake fluid. Spoke to EBC in UK ...no yellow EBC pads for 86 yet (full race) but would be happy to make a set and costs should be around R 3000 for the pads. This D2 racing kit that include 8 pot callipers looks interesting but no idea of cost ... http://www.formulafriction.co.za/?page_id=108 Will revert back once SC is fitted in 3 weeks and EBC yellow pads are installed on std. front discs. Good advice.
Have you spoken to Star Brake? Still not sure what their relation to Formula Friction is, but I think they had Yellow stuff in stock. We got pretty generic Subaru brakes anyway so it's nothing new. Either way, Powerbrake is top notch and very very knowledgeable, they don't just sell the stuff, they manufacture and they sponsor a couple of Dakar teams so they really do know what they're doing.

While I haven't used Powerbrake before there stuff is of a super high quality and has a great reputation. Budgetary constraints will send me to Star Brake though who have also never let me down thus far.
Also depending which 86 you have STD vs HIGH from what we've seen STD 86 has Impreza/Legacy brakes (obviously not STI) so I'm damn certain there are EBC pads that will fit. Just waiting for my stock pads and discs to go and then I will enquire... - stock pads seem to have magical longevity (41000km thus far) but can be overwhelmed in enthusiastic use... Quote:

I've just got some Vari hook slotted discs for the front, Endless MX-72 pads and PFC 665 brake fluid. HUGE difference to the stock brakes
