I own both side-by-side, I don't notice any difference between the two. I'm not saying that there ISN'T an MPG difference...but I've never driven my 2nd gen and said "Wow, my MPG has gotten pretty bad now".

Both. When I first got the car I figured the in-car calculator was making things up. I did the math a couple times at fill up and it came out to within a tenth of the in-car calculator each time.

In car calculations w/ 255 tires:

gen 1 w/ updated diff ratio (17+) - 28.9
gen 2 - 25.9

My 2023 6mt High 20’s mpg hand calculated 90% hwy @75mph-80. I’m sure 60-70 would be at 30-32mpg on flat road.

There has been allot of people shitting on its mpg estimates… but it easily exceeds dealer sticker mpg. Since the 2nd Gen is essentially equivalent to a 1st Gen. supercharged on low boost I would say the increased power output and mpg combo is a very optimistic expectation.

I don't get why these cars get such low MPG in highway cruising. My Mazda 3 probably has more air drag, weighs the same, has a 2.0L, and similar gearing. It gets high 40s when cruising at 70mph. Seems like this car should get 40mpg.

Only had my Gen 2 for a week or so, but covered quite a few ks. Economy seems near identical to my 2017 GTS so far.

Gear ratios? Does your Mazda have a manual or an auto? Many of our BRZ's have manuals and these days they tend to get less gas mileage compared to the auto's even in instances when both transmissions have the same number of gears.

I've also noticed, Subaru's across the board seem to trail other Japanese brands when it comes to gas mileage and they are way behind the Germans when it comes to the efficiency of their 4 cylinder engines. My 2013 GTI which was heavier and less aerodynamic got measurably better mileage in average usage and on the highway.

I have to admit, gas mileage wasn't in the top criteria for choosing the car and I'm happy it out performs expectations. Still love the car.

Gear ratio is definitely one of the biggest factors. Cruising at 70mph at 3-3.5K RPM or whatever it is with the new gen is a poor way to get good mpg ratings. I recall someone that posted a 3.7 FD for the first gen a few years ago from the EU market that showed an advertised mpg rating of over 40mpg on highway.

To be honest, I didn't pay attention in my first gen......new to 36k miles. I haven't paid in attention in my 2nd gen.........new to 1100 miles.

Sold my brz; I couldn’t afford the gas. It was 3mpg less than I thought (I’m waiting to hear this about any sports car.

More hp trq and close to same gearing from the first gen would theoretically net the same or higher mpg… the difference in fuel is a Taco Bell quesadilla worth either you get the shits or you smile.

added up my gas receipts for the first year with the car

daily commute is 18 miles round trip of suburban driving. car rarely sees the highway.
